RELIGION IN BRIEF | Mission conference today at Mount Sinai

The Rev. Julius C. Porcher Jr. will lead the annual mission conference from 10 a.m. to noon today at Mount Sinai Baptist Church, 111 Cambria Ave., Johnstown.
A prayer luncheon will be served at noon.
The topic of the conference is “The Present Future Touching Lives With Transforming Love.” I John 3:16-18.
The Rev. Ronnie C. Morris Sr. will deliver the message at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Three to speak at Maple Spring church
The Rev. Linda Stoner, the Rev. John Stoner and Connie Martin will deliver messages during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Maple Spring Church of the Brethren, 106 Spring Road, Hollsopple.
The sermon will be “The Old Is Gone, the New Has Come! All Is From God,” with Scripture from II Corinthians 5:16-21.
Tim McDonald will lead the children’s story. Music will be provided by Carol Leverknight and Carole Horner.
Film to be shown in Northern Cambria
“The Cross and the Switchblade” will be shown at 2 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday at North End Assembly, 2305 Philadelphia St., Northern Cambria.
The film is about David Wilkerson, who grew up in northern Cambria County and is the founder of Teen Challenge, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.
Teen Challenge celebrated its 50th year in ministry in 2008.

Music fest on Sunday at church grove
Christ Casebeer Evangelical Lutheran Church will hold its fifth annual Bluegrass & Gospel Music Festival at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church’s memorial grove, Route 985, Somerset Pike, Somerset.
Entertainers are Rob Griffith and Linda Biery. The featured group will be Meat & Potatoes.
Teen Challenge Choir in concert Sunday
Teen Challenge Choir will present a program of gospel music and testimony at 5 p.m. Sunday at First Assembly of God, 12th Street and Somerset Avenue, Windber.
Abundant Life Ministry schedules services
Abundant Life Ministry will hold a prepastoral service at 4 p.m. Sunday at 1067 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown.
The Revs. Richard and Donna Williams and the congregation of Heavenly Sent Ministries will be guests.
A second pastoral anniversary will be held at 4 p.m. Sept. 6. Pastor Sabrina Hardison of Works of Deliverance Fellowship will speak.

St. James planning special service Sunday
St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 400 Pine St., Johns-town, will hold its 50th pre-anniversary service at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The Ebenezer Baptist Church of Pittsburgh and its male chorus and congregation and the Rev. J. Van Winsett, pastor and president of Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention, will be guests.
First Mennonite to hold annual picnic
First Mennonite Church, 705 Somerset St., Johnstown, will hold its annual picnic at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Somerset Street playground.
A worship service and welcoming of the New Service Adventure Group will be held.
Groups will perform at Westmont church
White Noise and Song Works will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Westmont Presbyterian Church fellowship hall, 601 Luzerne St.
The fundraising event will benefit Westmont Family Counseling Ministries.

Moxham Ministerium planning services
Moxham Ministerium will begin monthly ecumenical services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 Grove Ave.; Oct. 1 at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 700 Park Ave.; Nov. 5 at Moxham Lutheran Church, 500 Park Ave.; and Dec. 3 at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 609 Park Ave.
A community prayer walk will begin at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at Moxham Lutheran Church.

Youth conference opens Friday
Works of Deliverance Fellowship I.M. Youth Conference will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Heritage Discovery Center, 201 Sixth Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.
Conference speakers are Joy Cox and Michael Taylor on Friday and Timotheus Pope and Sabrina Hardison on Sept. 5.
Registration fee – for those 13 and older – is $30 per person.

Diocese to offer music workshops
The Altoona-Johnstown Diocesan Liturgy Committee will offer music workshops on “Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship” from 8:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 12 at St. John the Evangelist Lakemont, Altoona; Sept. 19 at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, 1621 Ferndale Ave., Johnstown; and Sept. 26 at Our Lady of Victory in State College.
Registration is $15.

“Tuesdays With Morrie” will be onstage Thursday through Sept. 11 at Cresson Lake Playhouse, 279 Shapiro Road, near Loretto. The drama is the true story of journalist Mitch Albom and his former college professor, Morrie Schwartz, a terminally ill man facing his own mortality.

Thaddeus Pawlowski, son of Rosemary Pawlowski, Bottle Works executive director, and Edwin Pawlowski, a partner at Pawlowski-Haman Architects, is looking into the past with an eye on the future in his exhibit for the opening of Art Works.
