Art museums to host annual student shows

For the 15th year, the area’s talented young artists will be celebrated at exhibitions at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art locations in Loretto and Ligonier Valley.

“Artists of the 21st Century,” the museum’s annual student art exhibition, will be on display Friday through April 6 at the Loretto facility and Feb. 22 through April 21 at the Ligonier facility.

A total of 310 works created by more than 300 students from 15 school districts and 36 schools will be featured in the dual exhibitions.

Schools in Cambria, Somerset, Bedford, Blair and Indiana will be featured in the Loretto exhibition, while schools in Westmoreland and Fayette counties will be exhibited at Ligonier Valley.

Each museum will hold an opening reception to celebrate each exhibition and the region’s young artists.

The Loretto reception will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 16. The Ligonier Valley reception is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. March 3.

Parking for the Ligonier Valley reception is available at Fort Ligonier only, with free shuttles running to and from the museum.

The receptions are open to the public, but the museum suggests a donation of $1 per person to support the display.

“This exhibition is a great opportunity for students to see their own work professionally exhibited in an accredited art museum,” said Jessica Campbell, museum education coordinator.

“It’s truly one of my favorite exhibitions because of the incredible diversity, and it allows the museum to share the work of these talented young artists with the community.”

Schools represented in the Loretto exhibition are Altoona Area, Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic, Bishop McCort Catholic, Blacklick Valley, Cambria Elementary, Cambria Heights Elementary, Coal Country Hangout Youth Center, East Side Elementary, Forest Hills, Indiana, Jackson Elementary, Northern Cambria, Portage Area, Richland Elementary and St. Michael.

Schools participating in the Ligonier Valley exhibition are Baggaley Elementary, Bovard Elementary, Fort Allen Elementary, Greater Latrobe Junior and Senior high schools, Greensburg Salem Middle and High schools, Hempfield Area Senior High, Holy Trinity, Latrobe Elementary, Maxwell Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, Perry Elementary, Stanwood Elementary, Valley School of Ligonier, Wendover Middle School, West Hempfield Elementary and Middle schools and West Point Elementary.

Each district is permitted to submit up to 20 individual projects and one group project.

The exhibition is held in conjunction with National Youth Art Month and the State Arts-in-Education Month and is open to schools that participate in SAMA’s Museum/School Partnership Program.Young artists’ exhibitions
