Award-winning jazz

Winter Jazz 2008 featuring Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Arturo Sandoval will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center, Pitt-Johnstown campus, Richland Township.

Proceeds benefit the Blackington Endowment, which makes it possible to bring top quality entertainment to the arts center.

Tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for students.

Five-part harmony

Chamber Music Series of Greater Johnstown will present the a cappella quintet White Noise at 7 tonight at First Presbyterian Church, 309 Lincoln St., downtown Johnstown.

Members of the group are Nathan and Kristen Santos, Elizabeth Good, Mark Weakland and Doug Wilkin.

Inspired by Manhattan Transfer, the group sings mostly a cappella music and will announce tonight’s repertoire from the stage.

Tickets are $17 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students.

Creative celebration

“Among Others Things: A 709 Rail-road Street Event,” a fundraiser for the art and music venue in Old Conemaugh Borough, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Events will include performances by Out of His Mind Dance and various local musicians, an art competition between local high schools, poetry readings and an all-day art show featuring works by painter Laci Hess of Johnstown and photographers Ashley Rose and Adam Perella, both of Pittsburgh.

Admission is $5 for the entire day of art and music, with proceeds benefiting the operating expenses of 709 Railroad Street.

Reading write

Readings for Writers featuring Fred Fornoff and Alessandra Lynch will be held at 7:30 tonight at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Fornoff, a professor of Spanish and humanities at Pitt-Johnstown, has translated Spanish poetry.

His two-volume translation of the writings of Jos Mart will be published later this year.

Lynch is the author of “Sails the Wind Left Behind” and “It Was a Terrible Cloud at Twilight.”

Her poems also have appeared in The American Poetry Review, The Antioch Review and Ploughshares.

Admission is free.

Laurel Highland Off & On Road Bicycling Association will hold its annual kick off membership party at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at American Eagle Screen Printing and Embroidery, 1107 Cushon St., Johnstown.

There will be free pizza and beverages in addition to prizes and cycling information.

Rockin’ country

Country fiddler Chris Higbee, founder of regional favorite PovertyNeck Hillbillies, will perform at 8 tonight at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center in Richland Township.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, free admission for UPJ students and $5 for other college students.

Wrestling wrangle

Hometown wrestlers Bill Collier and Brandy Way will appear in a bout of Keystone Championship Wrestling at 4 p.m. Sunday at Westmont Grove, 1000 Edgehill Drive, Westmont.

Tickets are $10 in advance at Pino’s Pizza, 722 Walters Ave., Richland Township, and $12 at the door.

Poetry/prose party

An open-mike poetry and prose reading sponsored by the Works in Progress Writers’ Workshop will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Laurel Arts, 214 S. Harrison Ave., Somerset.

There will be door prizes and free refreshments.

Other readings will be held on June 7, Aug. 2 and Oct. 4.

“Oklahoma!” will be presented at 7 tonight and Saturday at Conemaugh Township Area High School, Davidsville.

Marriage mayhem

“I Take This Man,” a comedy by Jack Sharkey, will be performed by Mount Aloysius students at 7 p.m. Thursday and April 18 and 19 at Alumi Hall on the college’s Cresson campus.

Student actors are Justin Cox, Maria Zavada, Amanda Wolf and Gerald Cox.

Tea party

Mrs. Buck’s Spring Tea will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. May 3 at Cambria County Historical Society, 615 N. Center St., Ebensburg.

Reservations are required and should be made by April 26.

The 11 a.m. tea is nearly sold out, but there is seating available for 2 p.m.

Victorian dress is optional.

The cost of $14 benefits the garden and lawn upkeep at the A.W. Buck House, headquarters for the historical society.
