Three area bands have joined forces to throw a Halloween party in observance of Fright Night.
The second annual Great Pumpkin Masquerade Ball will be held Oct. 31 at Ace’s, 316 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.
The bands, Ribbon Grass, YUM and the all-girl band Kitty Whip, will share the stage and be dressed in costumes to get revelers in the spirit.
Doors will open at 8 p.m., said Terri Single, a vocalist for Ribbon Grass.
“We had about 500 people attend last year’s party, and I would say at least 80 percent were in costumes.
Those wishing to participate in the costume contest must be at Ace’s before 9:30 to register.
“As people come in and choose to be in the contest, we will photograph them,” Single said. “Later, we will compile the entries and select the top 10 finalists.”
The audience will make the ultimate decision by their applause to decide the top three male and female entries.
First prize male and female winners will receive $100, while second and third place male and female finishers will receive $50 and $25, respectively.
Single anticipates another large crowd since the party falls on Halloween night.
“We had a similar party on St. Patrick’s Day, and it was the largest crowd,” Single said.
The music begins at 9:30.
Ribbon Grass plays everything from country to hip-hop, while YUM is a high-energy dance band performing ’80s songs, modern rock, pop, country and rap.
Ruschelle Dillon, lead singer of Kitty Whip, describes the group’s sound as dance rock alternative.
“We cover songs such as Joan Jett’s ‘I Hate Myself for Loving You’ and ‘Sugar’ by System of a Down,” Dillon said.
The Young Professionals of the Alleghenies has partnered with the bands to co-sponsor the event.
The organization will have a table set up for anyone interested in joining or requesting information.
Tickets are $10, and there will be no advance ticket sales or table reservations.
Entrance will be on a first-come, first-served basis, Single said.
“For $10, it’s cheaper than throwing a house party,” she said. “I tell people to gather up those guests who would have been invited and come out to Ace’s and have a chance to win some money.”
