The 10th annual Miners’ Memorial Day Weekend is an occasion for the community to celebrate its coal-mining heritage.

The event, featuring a variety of entertainment, crafts, food and family fun, will be held June 19-21 in downtown Windber.

Sandra Pritt, president of the sponsoring Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation and event chairwoman, said the community is eager to welcome visitors to its free, family-oriented event.

In conjunction with the commemoration, a free concert by the Somerset Community Band will be presented at 7 p.m. June 19 at Arcadia Theater, 1418 Graham Ave., Windber.

Proceeds benefit Heather Miller, daughter of Donald and Wendy Miller of Osterburg. Heather, a fifth-grader in the Chestnut Ridge School District, is battling a rare form of cancer.

While the concert is free, organizers will conduct a freewill offering as people enter the theater to help the Miller family.

Also on June 19, a street dance, featuring the music of the Conniptions, will be presented at the performance tent located at Graham Avenue and 15th Street.

All musical acts throughout the weekend will perform there.

A motorcycle show, which will be on Graham Avenue, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. June 20 with advance registration required.

Trophies and other prizes will be awarded in various categories – cruiser, touring, sport bike, antique, mild custom, radical custom, best paint and best of show selected by a panel of judges.

Registration for the bike show on June 20 is free, Pritt said.

“This will be the third year for the bike show,” she said.

“Last year, we had over 200 registrations, but because of rain that number was reduced.”

Other activities on June 20 feature music by the Button Box Orchestra from 10 a.m. to noon; Rosie and the Jammers from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; Laurel Highlanders Bagpipes from 3 to 4; and a street dance at the music tent with music by The Desperadoes from 8 to 11.

A fireworks display underwritten by Windber’s Bi-Lo foods and Our Town newspaper will be launched at 9:30 June 20.

A children’s activities area and petting zoo will operate from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 20 and noon to 5 on June 21 at the Windber Community Building on Graham Avenue.

An antique and classic car show will take place from noon to 5 p.m. June 21 on Graham Avenue. More than 200 vehicles took part in last year’s show, Pritt said.

Radio personality Jessica Taylor will emcee the car show and disc jockey Walt McClelland will entertain from noon to 4 p.m.

“Registration begins at 11 a.m., and we have four blocks of vintage cars filling side streets and parking lots,” Pritt said.

Also on June 21, students of Sharon Wissinger’s dance studio, Dancer’s Haven, will perform from 12:30 to 1 p.m. From 2 to 2:30, there will be music by Hayley Click of Windber, who sings and plays guitar.

Food vendors will operate from 8 to 11 p.m. June 19, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. June 20 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 21.

Craft vendors will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 20 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 21.

“We have 34 craft vendors and 17 food vendors lined up so far and we are getting calls from vendors asking us if they can be a part of our celebration,” Pritt said.

Pritt is part of a 13-member committee, but realizes that putting on such an event takes a lot of community support.

“We also have many local folks volunteering, and this event would not be possible without their help,” Pritt said.

Poll

A Berks County lawmaker has sponsored legislation that would eliminate Pennsylvania’s township, borough and city governments and would make counties responsible for roads, police, fire and other services. Do you support this concept?

No, I do not support eliminating municipal governments.
Yes, I support shifting responsibility to counties.
Maybe - It is a starting point for moving toward a better system than we have now.
