WEEKEND EVENTS | Corps' celebration

The 150-member Cadet Drum and Bugle Corps will perform a free show at 7:30 tonight at Richland High School’s Herlinger Field.

The event will feature the corps’ 2009 show, which includes music from “West Side Story.”

The corps, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, is the oldest, continuously operating drum and bugle corps in the world.

The group, based in Allentown, has won numerous national championships as well as winning the world title nine times, most recently in 2005.

Child’s play

The grand opening of Johnstown Children’s Museum will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Discovery Center, 201 Sixth Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Since the theme of the museum is Johnstown, children will be able to dress like coal miners and steelworkers.

The museum is geared toward children ages 4 to 10, but there are attractions for younger and older children.

Children can visit the Water Room, the Steel Mill, the Mix-Master Studio Mix and the Fashion Show.

Admission is free for the grand opening only.

Kids’ korner

The 23rd annual Kids-A-Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Point Stadium in downtown Johnstown.

The event, sponsored by Cambria County Health and Welfare Council, will feature social service agencies and businesses offering entertainment, health information and hands-on recreational and learning activities.

All activities are provided at no cost and are designed for children ages 13 and younger.

Featured activities are basic health screenings, fire safety, a Kids-A-Fair Idol contest, an inflatable ride, face painting, an obstacle course and planting a flower.

Information about resources offered by the participating agencies will be available.

Going green

“When the World Was Green,” the debut effort of (un)apologetic productions, will be presented at 8 tonight at Satori Gallery, 155 Village St. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

The play centers on a chef turned-murderer and a young female journalist.

Tickets are $10, and half of the proceeds will benefit the Keystone Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Tickets that are not reserved will be available at the door.

Reserved tickets must be paid for at the door.

Mother-daughter exhibit

The works of Sally C. Fink, costumer, and Hilda C. Fink, quilter, are featured in “Fabric Fantasies II” on display through June 26 at Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.

Hilda Fink will have 53 quilted pieces on display, while her daughter, Sally, will have 11 costumes.

Big top bash

Circus Extravaganza will bring three big shows to Johnstown on Saturday at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena, 326 Napoleon St., Johnstown.

Showtimes are 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.

Acts will feature a snake charmer, performing dogs and the Globe of Death.

Advance adult tickets are $8.

Children will be admitted free with a paid adult ticket.

Wearing of the green

An Irish Cultural Celebration, sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, will be held Saturday and Sunday at Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.

Saturday’s entertainment will include Aran from noon to 2:30 p.m., Bell School of Irish Dance from 2:30 to 3, Tree from 3 to 5 and Dead Irish Blues from 3:30 to 8.

Entertainment on Sunday will feature Tree from noon to 3, Tir Na Nog Irish Dance from 3 to 3:30, Laurel Highlanders Bagpipe Band from 3:30 to 4:30 and Dead Irish Blues from 4:30 to 7.

On the greens

The 56th Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions continues today through Sunday at Sunnehanna Country Club in Westmont.

Rickie Fowler, two-time defending Sunnehanna Amateur champion, fronts a field that includes more than 70 players.

Herbal essence

The 11th annual Pick-A-Dilly Herb Faire will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Dillweed Bed and Breakfast, Route 403, Dilltown.

Growers will sell a variety of flowering plants, herbs and perennials, and other vendors will include a soapmaker, chainsaw artist, woodcraft jewelry artist, handcrafted copper designer and other garden vendors.

Free demonstrations and seminars will be presented by members of Indiana County Herb Study Group, co-sponsors of the event.

Visitors will learn the history and medicinal uses of the herb of the year, sweet bay laurel.

Admission is free.

Jazz in the park

Jazz in Your Face will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Central Park, downtown Johnstown, as part of the Concerts in the Park series.

Music lovers should bring a blanket or lawn chair or sit on one of the park’s benches.

Creating reading

Kick-off registration for “Be Creative @ Your Library,” the 13th annual summer reading program, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Highland Community Library, 330 Schoolhouse Road, Richland Township.

The five-week program will be held June 22 through July 25 and will feature hip-hop and theater workshops and a weekly storytime program.

Special events will include “Bill Pate’s Drum Trail,” an interactive music experience, and Jeff Vanderhoff’s “Creative Magical Contraptions Magic Show.”

Registrations will be accepted through June 22.

Biker benefit

The seventh annual Angels Among Us Patricia McTonic Scavenger Hunt-Poker Run will be held Saturday beginning at Buford’s Saloon, Jerome.

Sign ups will be held from 10 to 11:45 a.m., with riders leaving at noon.

An after-ride party will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight at Jerome fire hall, where the kitchen will open at 5:30, and tent camping will be available.

Entertainment will be provided by DJ Denny Salem, Paul Revere’s Ride and Southern Steel.

Those who attend must be at least 21 years old.

The cost, which includes food, beverages and entertainment, is $15 per each driver or $25 for riding couples. The cost for passengers is $10.

Admission at the gate will be $15.

Book worms

The 52nd annual book sale, sponsored by the American Association of University Women, will continue today and Saturday in the alcove on the lower level of The Galleria, Richland Township.

Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

There will be a selection of hardback and paperback books, including cooking, children’s, religious, fiction, nonfiction and textbooks, along with tapes and records.

A gift selection section of specially priced books will be on the front tables, and Saturday will feature a $2 a bag special.

Proceeds will benefit the AAUW scholarship fund at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College.

Dual choirs

The Altoona-Johnstown Diocesan Festival Choir will present two concerts this weekend in observance of the 200th birthday anniversary of St. Paul.

The first concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John Gualbert Cathedral, 117 Clinton St., Johnstown, and the encore performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, One Cathedral Square, Altoona.

The choir will be directed by Johnstown cathedral music director Evonne Yanzetich-Homway and Altoona cathedral music director Nicholas Will.

The choir will be accompanied by Hilltop Brass, a Johnstown-based brass ensemble.

Admission is free.

Swedish sensation

Bjorn Again: The ABBA Experience will give a command performance at 7 tonight at Arcadia Theater, 1418 Graham Ave., Windber.

The group re-creates the look and sound of the ’70s Swedish rock group, ABBA, with a big screen projector and its own sound and lighting.

They perform ABBA hits such as “Dancing Queen” and “Mama Mia.”

Tickets are $39, $37 and $35.

Homegrown talent

“A Satori in Johnstown,” a free art and music street festival presented by Satori Gallery, 155 Village St. in the Moxham section of Johnstown, will be held from noon to dusk Sunday in front of the gallery.

Local talents will show their artwork and perform original music.

All area artists are invited to show their work and are required to register at Satori Gallery.

The musical lineup includes The Wheels, Dave DiStefano with Grand Hadron, Endless Mike & the Beagle Club, The Jeff Perigo Opus, Inside Out, The Sunflower Spectacle, Emmet and Mary, Dallas Zimmerman, Justin Garman, AM Radio and Glenn Henry.

SongWorks, Johnstown’s songwriting group, will perform and host an open mic all day.

There will be an open drum circle at sundown, and refreshments will be furnished by Village Street Cafe.

Slovenian celebration

Bobbin lace demonstrations by East Wheatfield Township artist Allie Marguccio will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday as part of a Celebration of Slovenian Heritage that will be on display through Monday at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Wood-turning demonstrations by Tom Marguccio also will be held, and Slovenian music and dance with Bronco Toter will be featured at 6:30 p.m.

Bandshell blast

A double musical bill will continue the summer concert series at 5 p.m. Sunday at Roxbury Bandshell on Franklin Street in Johnstown.

Jill Gontkovic Trio will perform at 5 and Ribbon Grass Acoustic Group will play at 6.

Twisted Tara

“I’ll Never Be Hungry Again,” a musical spoof, will continue at 2 and 8 p.m. today, 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Mountain Playhouse, Jenners-town.

Tickets are $8 to $37 depending on performance day, time, seat location and eligible discounts.

The 13th annual Great Portage Yard Sale, sponsored by the Portage Area Historical Society, will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday throughout the Portage area.

The 22nd annual Antiques on the Diamond antique show and sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Ligonier.
