Organizers of the 13th annual Night of Rock, Rhythm and Blues want patrons to celebrate the success of the Johnstown Free Medical Clinic and support the growing need for services.
The benefit dance, which raises funds for free medical care, will be held Wednesday at Ace’s, 316 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.
Ace’s will have the fun and feel of a blues club.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the first band taking the stage at 7.
The opening act will feature Stone Bridge Blues Band, followed by the featured act, The Billy Price Band of Pittsburgh.
“It will be a great night, where people can come and relax, dance, eat and have an all around good time,” said Paula Kenepp, clinic executive director.
“This has been the biggest fundraiser for the clinic annually.”
Kenepp called Price one of the benefit’s favorite performers.
“Going by attendance in the past, I expect at least 250 people and hopefully more,” Kenepp said.
Price, who has performed for this event the past several years, has been entertaining audiences for the past three decades. He formed The Billy Price Band in 1990.
The group is known for its new interpretations of blues, rhythm and blues and soul classics.
Price attracted national attention during his three-year association with guitarist Roy Buchanan.
He is the vocalist on two of Buchanan’s albums, “That’s What I’m Here For” and “Livestock.”
With Buchanan, Price toured the United States and Canada, playing such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Newport Jazz Festival, the Roxy and the Troubadour in Los Angeles and the Spectrum in Philadelphia.
He put together Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band in 1977.
Before their breakup in 1990, that band recorded four albums and developed a reputation as one of the most exciting touring bands.
Price, whose real name is Bill Pollak, lives in Pittsburgh and works at the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute as a marketing manager.
Johnstown Free Medical Clinic, which is located at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s Lee Campus at 340 Main St. in downtown Johnstown, provides medical and pharmaceutical care to working uninsured members of the community.
The clinic opened in 1998 to serve low income and uninsured patients.
“They have to meet eligibility guidelines,” Kenepp said.
“We have two doctors and a nurse practitioner who volunteer their services, but we could use more.”
The cost is $10 per person when tickets are purchased prior to the event and $15 per person at the door. The ticket includes food and entertainment.
