Rodney Eatman and Glenn Brougher will be honored when the 2009 Artists’ Hall of Fame is held Saturday at the Holiday Inn, 250 Market St., downtown Johnstown.

Eatman is a retired professor of drama from Pitt-Johnstown and a theatrical director and writer.

Brougher is a well-known artist and art teacher, with memberships in Allied Artists of Johnstown, the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society and Community Arts Center of Cambria County.

A reception will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7.

A live auction will feature a full-size replica of Morley’s Dog, and a silent auction will feature art bottles crafted by area artists.

Tickets are $50 a person or $95 a couple.

Regaling revelry

The ninth annual Mountain Playhouse Revels will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Green Gables Restaurant and Mountain Playhouse, Jennerstown.

This year’s raffle prize will be $20,000 in cash.

Those who wish to participate in the raffle do not have to be present to win and don’t have to buy a ticket to the event.

After a cocktail and hors d’oeuvre reception at 6, guests will walk to the playhouse, where actors Tom Schaller and Seana Hollingsworth will perform.

After the show, guests will return to the restaurant at 7:45 for a two-course gourmet dinner prepared by executive chef Susan Kroft.

At 8:45, the raffle drawing will be held, and a dessert buffet will be available.

There will be dancing until midnight with music by the Sly Swing Quartet.

Tickets are $150 per person, and raffle tickets are $50.

Allied for art

The 77th annual juried exhibition of Allied Artists of Johnstown will be on display through Dec. 6 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Johnstown, Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center, Richland Township.

The winner of this year’s Josephine Paul Memorial Award for Best of Show is “A Heavenly Celebration,” an acrylic painting by Joe Berezansky of Johnstown.

Other award winners are “Neo-Cubist Nonsense” by Kathleen Kase Burk of Ebensburg; “Tulips” by Michael C. Begenyi of Northern Cambria; “Nature’s Design” by Diane Safko of Johnstown; “Swedish Pastry Shop” by Mark Parrish of Westover; “Season’s Greetings” by Daniel C. Helsel of Davidsville; “Indian Summer” by Ned Wert of Brush Valley; “Patent Pending” by Jim Richey of Johnstown; “M4dOnn4” by Sam Howard of Johnstown; and “Image C.D.” by Sallie Zoerb of Somerset.

Classically American

“American Classics” will be presented by River City Brass Band at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center, Richland Township.

This celebration will feature the music of American composers, including Gershwin’s “Porgy & Bess” and Charles Ives’ “Variation on America.”

Favorites from Arthur Pryor, William Schuman, Martin Gould and Leonard Bernstein also will be featured.

Tickets are $25 and $23 for adults and $23 and $21 for senior citizens and students.

Ring(s) and a prayer

Auditions for Band of Brothers’ production of “Lloyd’s Prayer” will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Elias Painting building, 325 Bedford St., downtown Johnstown.

“Lloyd’s Prayer,” which will be directed by Amanda Fisher and Paula Carroll, will require three men and one woman.

Auditions will require readings from the script, and call backs are scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

“Lloyd’s Prayer,” written by Kevin Kling, is a comic parable about Bob the Raccoon Boy and what happens to him when he is rescued from the raccoons who raised him and taught him what it means to be human.

The fast-paced, actor-driven comedy will be performed Jan. 8-9 and 15-16.

Arts advocacy

“Advocating for the Arts in the Current Economic Climate,” a professional development workshop, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Johnstown, located at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center, Richland Township.

The workshop will discuss the situation with the state arts budget and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and address outside funding sources for arts programming and grant-writing tools and tips.

The cost is $30 per person, and reservations are required by Monday.

Homecoming hoopla

The popular Pittsburgh band The Clarks will perform at 9 tonight at St. Francis University, Loretto, as part of Homecoming 2009.

There will be fireworks after the show.

The homecoming parade line-up will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

There will be tailgating before the homecoming game in the JFK parking lot, then the football game against Monmouth University will begin at 1 p.m. at DeGol Field.

Homecoming week will conclude with a dance at 10 p.m. Saturday at Stokes Auxiliary Gym.

Lovely display

An opening reception for “Love at Home and in the Universe,” a collection by local artist Wendy Laney of Northern Cambria, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Wolf-Kuhn Gallery at Mount Aloysius College, Cresson.

The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 20.

Crafty auction

The Western Pennsylvania District Church of the Brethren Auction will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Camp Harmony.

The auction will feature quilts, afghans, handcrafted furniture, theme baskets, antiques and collectibles.

Doors open at 7 a.m., and breakfast, lunch and fresh-baked pies will be available.

From the Hollsopple exit off Route 219 South, guests should follow Route 601 South on Plank Road and along the Quemahoning Dam to the camp.

Real history

“We Never Got the Welcome Home: Western Pennsylvania Vets Remember Vietnam,” a documentary film produced by students from Northern Cambria High School, will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Discovery Center, 201 Sixth Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

The film is part of a new series, “The Public Matters,” which is being sponsored by the discovery center and Pitt-Johnstown.

Paul Douglas Newman, a professor of history at Pitt-Johnstown, will present the film.

The series, which highlights research conducted by Pitt-Johnstown, will be held twice a year in the spring and fall at the discovery center.

Student aid

St. Francis University in Loretto will host open houses Wednesday and Nov. 14 for prospective students and their families.

Registration for Wednesday’s open house will begin at 9 a.m., and registration for the Nov. 14 open house will begin at 8.

Both registrations will be held in the JFK Student Center lounge.

Space for Wednesday’s open house, which will include on-site decisions, is limited.

Students may bring their completed applications for university officials to review, and administrators will give the students a decision before the open house ends.

At both open houses, prospective students will be able to speak to the university’s representatives at an academic and activities fair. A tour of the campus will be given.

The open houses will feature a presentation on the financial aid process.

Arts demonstrations

An Arts & Cultural Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort, near Hidden Valley.

There will be demonstrations on metalworking, blacksmithing, pottery and painting as well as arts and fine crafts exhibitors, children’s workshops, pony rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, live music and open fire-pit cooking.

Native heritage

The third annual Native American Festival will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Hadley Union Building’s Delaware Room on the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The free event is being held in celebration of National American Indian Heritage Month and is being sponsored by the university’s Native American Awareness Council and the Office of Social Equity and Civic Engagement.

The Allegany River Indian Dancers will perform at 1 and 3 p.m., and the Drums of Native Sisters also will perform during the festival.

Arts and crafts vendors will have work on display, and food vendors will provide refreshments.

Classical concert

The Pennsylvania Consort will present a concert of baroque music for organ and strings at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Bedford United Methodist Church, 132 E. John St., Bedford.

Featured performers are organist Bryan Lohr of Somerset and the Chamber Orchestra of the Alleghenies.
