Short-term enrichment classes will bring long-term learning.
“Discover Fall 2010,” the next session of personal-enrichment and professional development classes offered by Pitt-Johnstown’s Office of Outreach and Professional Services, will prove that learning can be fun.
The classes cover a five-week span from Saturday through Nov. 18.
“They’re not long term,” said Jeanne Susko, coordinator of Outreach and Professional Services.
“People are busy, and they fill in an evening.”
Overall, Susko said classes in the Mind and Body series are popular, allowing participants to de-stress before the holidays.
“What is really hot is Zumba,” she added.
“We got a lot right away and opened a new section. There are spaces still avail- able.”
Zumba is a fitness program using Latin music mixed with rock and roll.
Other mind and body classes include swing and jitterbug, yoga, hip hop, aroma-scents, Latin bachata dance, CPR, first aid and caring for aging parents.
A belly dancing class offered in the Purposeful Pastimes series also is popular.
Susko said she will open another section if needed.
Other Purposeful Pastimes include ceramics, watercolors, a virtual tour of Ireland, oil painting, creative writing, Spanish tapas and calligraphy.
Another popular series features cooking classes at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.
Classes will include pierogi making, seafood Italiano, vegetarian cooking, Polish soups, Italian chicken and vegetables, healthful holiday entertaining and Middle Eastern cooking.
Several yoga classes also will be held at the arts center.
Classes in the professional-development series will feature job searching, resume writing, interviewing skills, business writing, public speaking and turning ideas into a patent.
There also will be grant writing, photography and computer classes and a family series that includes training for baby sitters.
“The baby-sitting is popular with teens,” Susko said.
“More have registered for the conversational sign language, too.”
Other language classes include conversational Polish and introduction to Arabic.
