— Knowledge will be sprouting in a new series of adult enrichment classes.

Explore Spring classes will bloom through June 4 on the Pitt-Johnstown campus, Richland Township, and  at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Jeanne Susko, director of Community Education and Outreach at Pitt-Johnstown, said there will be new classes in English as a second language, discovering Scotland, taboos in art, do-it-yourself projects, a walking tour of Moxham and cooking.

Susko said she has received calls on the Basic Survival English class, which is intended to assist anyone for whom English is not their primary language.

“They’re from people coming into the area to CTC, North American Hoganas and the hospitals,” she said.

“This will be conversational English.”

The class will be taught by Leonard Shurin, who has been active in the field of literacy and English as a second language since 1984.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for a Walking Tour of Moxham, which will lead participants through the streets of the historic neighborhood as well as into the renovated and refurbished homes.

Do-It-Yourself Projects will help participants work on home-improvement projects from refinishing countertops to using power tools safely.

“They will be shown how to do them in the most ecological and economic way,” Susko said.

Taboos in Art will showcase women in art and what has been acceptable throughout history.

“It will show limitations from not exposing an ankle to where women are headed now,” Susko said.

Discover Scotland will take visitors on a virtual tour of the Highlands, exploring myths, monsters, history, sports, literature and music.

“This continues our Discover series,” Susko said.

Cooking classes held at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center are popular, and this time, there are two Italian classes.

Italian Adventure will feature a meal centering on eggplant Parmesan Napoleon, and Extravaganza Italiano will feature bruschetta chicken.

There also will be Serbian cooking classes and one on tofu.

A Brazilian Samba Workout at the Bottle Works will offer a way to work off calories.

Because there is always an interest in Pitt-Johnstown’s mind and body classes, various dance classes will be offered.

Once again, baby-sitter training for ages 11 and older will be offered in the family series classes.
