Religion in brief | Communion celebrated at First Lutheran

Holy Communion will be celebrated at 5:30 tonight and 9:30 a.m. Sunday at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 415 Vine St., Johnstown.

The Rev. Eleanor Abarno will preach from John 6 on Jesus’ promise to be for us the bread of life.

Fellowship announces sermon topics

Pastor Gary L. Tustin will speak about “The Ashes of a Heifer,” taken from Numbers 19:1-6 and 10-13, during the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship services at Greater Johnstown Christian Fellowship, 3429 Elton Road.

Pastor Jim Gay will share “Elijah – Down but Never Out” at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Connection Café will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m., with children and youth classes following at 7.

‘Cleaning Out Closet’ topic at Maple Spring

Faithful will worship at Mount Hope UM

Services scheduled at Zion Lutheran

The Liturgy of Holy Communion will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church, 613 Locust St., downtown Johnstown, with a Gospel reading from John 6:35 and 41-51.

Adult study will begin at 10:30.

A midweek Liturgy of Holy Communion will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Memorial Chapel.

Grove Avenue sermon taken from Ephesians

The Rev. Deb Groeger will deliver the message “Words: Wounding or Healing,” taken from Ephesians 4:25-5:2, during the Sunday services at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 Grove Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

Adult Sunday school and contemporary worship service will begin at 9:15 a.m., followed by fellowship at 10:15.

Traditional worship service will begin at 10:45.

Nursery will be available.

Worshippers will meet at Moxham Lutheran

Worship will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Moxham Lutheran Church, 500 Park Ave., Johnstown, followed by fellowship and a discussion pertaining to different committees and groups within the church.

An informal worship with Holy Communion will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Lay speaker to talk at Christ UM

Judy Gunsallus, a certified lay speaker for the United Methodist Church, will speak on “Bread – Life,” based on John 6:35 and 41-51, during the 9:30 a.m. worship service at Christ United Methodist Church, Ohio Street and Cypress Avenue, Moxham section of Johnstown.

Guest soloist Roger Felix will sing “Just as I am.”

Richard Rippin will be the worship leader.

A fellowship time will follow the service and Sunday school will begin at 10:45.

Isaiah is basis for Second Presby sermon

The Rev. Art Moffat will speak on “Learning to have Inner Peace,” with Scripture readings from Isaiah 26:3, during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Second Presbyterian Church, 565 Park Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

The choir will sing “Without Seeing You.”

Services scheduled at Moxham Brethren

The Rev. William Wenger, pastor, will deliver the message “The Gift of the Holy Spirit,” with Scripture readings taken from Ezekiel 36:25-27 and Acts 2:36-38, at the 10:10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Moxham Church of the Brethren, 536 Grove Ave., Johnstown.

Karen Spinos will tell the children’s story.

Sunday school will begin at 9.

Park Avenue UM to have guest speaker

Travis Dearmey, a member of Belmont United Methodist Church, will deliver the message during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 700 Park Ave., Johnstown.

Brett Merberger will provide special music.

Sunday school will begin at 9:15.

Beulah sermon based on Matthew

The Rev. Jeffrey Popson will deliver the message “Birdbaths & Flagpoles,” based on Matthew 13:1-9 and 18-23, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Beulah United Methodist Church, 716 Bedford St., Johnstown.

Contemporary service will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday school at 9:25.

Pastor will speak at Open Door church

Pastor Charles H. Zimmerman will speak on “Whose Team Are you On?” during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Community Open Door Church, Menoher Boulevard and Luzerne Street, Johnstown.

The musical team of Kristy McManus and Robert Miller will perform.

Marlene Beckwith will bring the children’s message.

Faithful will gather at Conemaugh Brethren

Pastor Horace Derr will deliver the message “Take Time to be Holy,” with Scripture from 1 Peter 1:12-15, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Conemaugh Church of the Brethren, 1256 William Penn Ave., Johnstown.

The Praise Team will provide special music.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Children’s church and nursery will be available.

The Rev. Ron Barto will deliver the message “Extreme Spiritual Makeover; What About Those Ears?” during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, 1068 Bedford St., Johnstown.

Windber Calvary sermon from John

The Rev. John Snyder will deliver the message “Body of Christ,” based on Scripture from John 6:35 and 41-51, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Windber Calvary United Methodist Church, 1800 Stockholm Ave.

There will be a children’s sermonette.

An innovative worship service will be held at 7 p.m.

‘Bread of Life’ will be taught at Roxbury

The Rev. Brian Simmons, pastor of Roxbury Church of the Brethren, 112 Sell St.,

Johnstown, will speak on “The Bread of Life,” with Scripture from John 6:41-51, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Special music will be provided by Melanie Shiley and Benjamin Shiley on trombones and Lukas Shiley on trumpet.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Vesper services will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church grove along Somerset Pike, Route 985. Participants are asked to bring lawn chairs and a sampling of their hobbies. Refreshments will be served.

Ferndale pastor will speak from Ephesians

The Rev. Len Findley, pastor of Ferndale United Methodist Church, 701 Vickroy Ave., Johnstown, will deliver the message “The Bread of Life,” with Scripture from Ephesians 4:25-5:2, at the 10:40 a.m. Sunday service.

George Kolesar will be the worship assistant, and Brandon Anderson will be the acolyte.

Fellowship will follow the service.

The Rev. Findley also will speak during the 9:30 a.m. service at Faith United Methodist Church, 369 Glessner Road, Johnstown.

Worshippers to hear ‘Three Child Kings’

The Rev. Kevin Rea will preach on “Three Child Kings” during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at Westmont United Methodist Church, 1428 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Prepastoral service at Abundant Life

Abundant Life Ministry will hold a final prepastoral celebration on behalf of its pastor, Elder Theresa A. Jones, during the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service. Evangelist Debra Bush will be the morning messenger.

Pastor Derrick Johnson, prophet and publisher of New Creation Family Worship Center, Greensburg, and his congregation will be the special guests for the 4 p.m. service.

Church will celebrate pastors’ anniversaries

The third pastoral anniversary of the Rev. Richard S. Williams and the Rev. Donna J. Williams will be celebrated Sunday at Heavenly Sent Ministries, 429 Second St., East Conemaugh.

Guest preacher will be the Rev. Theodore Tisinger of Shiloh Baptist Church, with his choir and faithful. The Rev. George Bailey of Altoona will serve as master of ceremony.

Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m., followed by service at 3 p.m.

Pleasant Hill Baptist to note milestone

The 88th church anniversary of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 205 Peelor St. in the Prospect section of Johnstown, will be celebrated with a pre-anniversary revival at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. The theme will be “Pressing Toward the Mark,” Philippians 3:14.

Pastor Sherrone L. Ingram of Newark, N.J., will be the speaker each night with Pleasant Hill deacons hosting Wednesday, with music by Pleasant Hill Mass Choir; Pastor Calvin T. McCray hosting Thursday, with music by Mount Sinai Baptist Church Choir; and Pastor Lloyd King, pastor of Bethel AME Church, hosting Friday, with the Bethel Dance Team.

Arbutus Brethren to see ‘Jonah’

Arbutus Church of the Brethren will travel to Sight and Sound Theater to see “Jonah” on Thursday, departing the church at 7:30 a.m. and returning at 9:30 p.m.

A sack lunch will be provided with a stop for shopping and dinner following the show.

Cost is $95 per person.

Diocese will honor married couples

The annual wedding anniversary Liturgies honoring couples celebrating their first, 25th, 40th, 50th, 55th and 60th anniversaries during 2012 will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 9 at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona and 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at St. John Gualbert Cathedral in Johnstown.

Bishop Mark L. Bartchak of Altoona-Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese will be celebrant and homilist.

A reception will follow the Eucharistic celebrations. Each couple will receive a certificate signed by the bishop.

Couples wishing to attend should contact their home church by Aug. 20 to make reservations.

BCK Ministries is now Flood City Church

BCK Ministries, 1723 Scalp Ave., Johnstown will be changing its name to Flood City Church and launching a new church on Sept. 2.

Pastor Brad Westover will continue to preach.
