The Evening on the Summit program begins a new season at 8 p.m. June 4 at Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site.
The free program is titled “Roebling’s Rope Tricks” and will be presented by Mike Garcia, park ranger.
People will learn how a young John A. Roebling, mastermind of the Brooklyn Bridge, got his start as an innovator on the Allegheny Portage Railroad.
Roebling designed an extremely tough yet flexible wire rope to haul canal boats up and over the Allegheny Mountains.
His wire rope replaced the hemp rope that deteriorated rapidly and occasionally snapped, sending canal boats racing down the mountain.
The presentation will also include a demonstration of how rope is made.

Symphony near its fund-drive goal
Johnstown Symphony Orchestra has reached 95 percent of its $100,000 goal of its annual sustaining fund drive for the 2011-12 season.
The fund drive, which began in February, helps to keep classical music alive in the community while providing music education for local youth.
Proceeds generated from the fund drive will help the symphony to support its youth orchestra and Inclined to Sing children’s chorus programs, as well as supporting young people’s concerts for area fifth-graders.
The drive also supports the symphony’s overall operating budget.
Donations, which are tax deductible, are still being accepted.

UPJ offering adventure camp
Pitt-Johnstown’s Office of Community Education and Outreach is offering an adventure camp to children ages 8 through 12 from June 20-24.
The fourth annual Junior Naturalist Outdoor Adventure Camp (JNOAC) is based at the Pitt-Johnstown campus.
The camp is designed to cultivate an active lifestyle and love for nature through participation in outdoor sports, conservation education and environmental enhancement.
Activities include rappelling down the side of the Pitt-Johnstown Living/Learning Center, performing a Tyrolean traverse, and learning about wilderness survival. Participants will also visit the Quemahoning Reservoir.
The theme for the camp is “Sustainable Living Practices: My Carbon Imprint” with emphasis on topics of sustainable energy sources, building and farming.
Other activities include fire starting; shelter building; food gathering; fresh-water snorkeling; map reading and compass use; wilderness trekking; leave-no-trace camping principles; CPR familiarization; canoeing and water safety/rescue; junior naturalist; and group environmental enhancement project.
The fee is $289 per child. Registration deadline is June 3 and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
