First United Methodist Church observing 100th anniversary

JOHNSTOWN — The 100th anniversary of First United Methodist Church, 436 Vine St., downtown Johnstown, will be celebrated during the 9:45 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Guest speakers during the worship service will include former church pastors and members of the church who have become pastors.

The celebration will include a reception for former pastors after the service.

An organ recital will be presented at 12:30 p.m. by E. Thomas Ferguson.

A presentation of “Visitors from the Past” by Jim and Luella Krieger will be held at 1:30.

The origins of the founding congregation reach back to 1838, with three denominations and two other worship centers.

The 1869 stone church withstood the disastrous waters of the 1889 Johnstown Flood and saved the lives of those who took refuge on its steep gable roof.

A larger house of worship was later needed, and the present structure was dedicated   Nov. 24, 1912.

The church was designated a “heritage landmark” in 1996 because of the significant events that occurred there.

In 1946, the United Brethren and Evangelical denominations merged, and in 1969, the conferences of the former Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist churches joined.
