Fat Friday Fundraiser changing venue

JOHNSTOWN — An upcoming fundraiser will bring the spirit of Mardi Gras to Johnstown.

The seventh annual Fat Friday Fundraiser will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 8 at Pasquerilla Conference Center, 301 Napoleon St., downtown Johnstown.

Proceeds will benefit the Roxbury Bandshell Preservation Alliance.

A buffet dinner provided by the conference center will be served at 6:45.

“This is the first year we’ve had it at the conference center,” Mary Borkow, alliance president, said.

“We needed space and wanted to bring the event downtown. We thought we’d try something new this year.”

The event is a spoof on Fat Tuesday, because the local event is held the Friday before the Lenten season begins.

Since the evening has a Mardi Gras theme, all who attend will receive colorful beads.

However, Borkow said the food will be non-Cajun.

Lester and Debbie McDaniel of Windber will serve as co-chairpersons.

For a $100 donation, guests will be entered in a drawing to win $10,000.

“There will be a maximum of 250 tickets sold on the chance to win $10,000,” Borkow said.

“After the 200th ticket is sold, we’ll be drawing Lucky 13 tickets.”

There also will be raffles, door prizes and a Chinese auction featuring jewelry, clothing and other items.

“There will be a lot of things happening that night,” Borkow said.

“We usually get about 500 people.”

Tickets for dinner only are $25 and include food, beverages and a chance for a door prize.

Dance music will be provided by Flood City Brass.

The band, known for its horn section, plays rock, soul, funk, ballads, pop and rhythm and blues music.

“All proceeds will go directly to the ongoing restoration of the Roxbury Bandshell,” Borkow said.

“This year, we’re going to concentrate on restoring the stage. These are the original risers and stage, and this is an extensive proposition.”

Borkow’s rule of thumb has always been to have the needed money before going forward on a project.

“We’re totally debt free,” she said.

All tickets must be purchased in advance by calling the Chamber of Commerce at 536-5107.

No tickets will be sold at the door.
