For creative minds | Laurel Arts will offer variety of camps to keep kids active

Summer campers at Laurel Arts will explore several new classes and lean on some tried-and-true favorites.

“We have some different themes, but we’ve been successful so we don’t want to mess with the formula,” said Mike Oliver, Laurel Arts executive director. “We get a decent turnout. Parents can find information on the Web and call us to register.”

New classes are jewelry making, a combined music and art camp, and theater.

Most camps will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at Laurel Arts’ locations at Georgian Place or the Philip Dressler Center for the Arts, both in Somerset.

This year, all-day camps will be geared toward specific age groups, and campers must have completed the lowest grade indicated for each camp to qualify.

Students should bring their own packed lunches and water bottles. Snacks will be provided.

Old clothes and paint shirts are the suggested attire.

In Jewelry Camp for Kids, from July 30 to Aug. 2, students in grades 3-9 will learn basic jewelry-making techniques using wire, clay, paper, metal, plastic, recycled materials and beads.

This camp is limited to 10 students.

In Theater Camp at The Mountain Playhouse, from June 18-22, campers in grades 1-12 will travel to the playhouse to work with professional actors.

The weeklong camp will end with a variety-show performance on Friday night or Saturday afternoon.

No acting experience is necessary, but campers must have completed first grade this school year to participate.

Theater camp tuition is $108 for Laurel Arts members and $135 for nonmembers.

Those interested should call Laurel Arts for an application.

Music & Art Camp will be held from June 25-28. Campers ages 10 and older will join the band D’Verse for a Celtic Camp for Kids, where campers will learn how to play Irish jigs or reels and how to give them a real Irish sound. There also will be games, contests and history stories to help campers appreciate this style of music.

Students should know how to play an instrument, read music or be able to easily pick up a tune by ear.

They should bring their instruments, a music stand, pencils and folders for their music.

After lunch, campers will attend a miniversion of Art Camp 101.

Tuition for the music and art camp is $104 for Laurel Arts members and $130 for nonmembers.

During Art Camp 101, from June 4-7, pupils in kindergarten through grade 6 will experience drawing, painting, printmaking, clay projects, fiber arts, music and movement.

This camp is limited to 12 pupils per instructor.

Painting Camp for Kids is scheduled for July 9-12. Pupils in kindergarten through grade 6 will use acrylic, tempera, ink, and watercolor paints as they learn new techniques.

This camp is limited to 10 children per instructor.

In Junior Chef Training Camp, from July 30 to Aug. 2, children in kindergarten through grade 2 will decorate a cake, bake cookies and make candy.

The week will end with a special dinner prepared by the campers.

During Art Camp Goes Green, from Aug. 6-9, pupils in kindergarten through grade 6 will turn trash into treasures using a recycling theme.

Recycled plastic, paper, string, metal, milk jugs, newspapers, plastic bags and aluminum cans will be used to create artwork.

This camp is limited to 12 children per instructor.

All other day camps are $96 for Laurel Arts members and $120 for nonmembers.

Advance registration is preferred.

Scholarships are available for all classes.

Junior Art Camps, for ages 3 to 5, are geared toward younger participants. Each session is a half-day, morning or afternoon session.

Morning sessions are 9 a.m. to noon, and afternoons are from 1 to 4 p.m.

Each week of camp features a different theme, and campers will spend their time learning, making art projects and participating in activities centered around the theme.

In Four Seasons, from June 4-7, campers will learn about winter, spring, summer and fall through crafts, snacks and stories.

Holidays Around the World, from July 9-12, will be a tour of holiday celebrations around the world.

During Exploring the United States, from Aug. 6-9, campers will travel throughout the

50 states while learning facts about each state.

All junior art camps are $48 for Laurel Arts members and $60 for nonmembers.
