Imaginative fundraiser | Come As You Art will benefit Cambria City venue

The newest fundraiser for Art Works in Johnstown is best described as imaginative.

Theresa Gay Rohall, Art Works executive director, wants people to embrace the Come As You Art benefit, which will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at 413 Third Ave. in Cambria City.

“It’s a new event for us and we want people to come dressed as their favorite artist, performer or piece of art,” said Rohall.

“People are only restricted by their imagination when it comes to choosing a costume.”

The response to the idea of a Halloween-style party in June has been favorable with people inquiring about what to wear.

“People want to know if they will feel out of place if they don’t come in costume,” Rohall said.

“Costumes are encouraged but not necessary to attend the fun evening.”

Dress as a poet, movie star, mime or any other performer because the sky is the limit.

As many as 200 people are expected for the initial event.

“No one knows who they may encounter during the evening,” Rohall said.

“People are planning costumes and everyone will be trying to guess who or what each costume represents.”

Patrons may be rubbing elbows with someone such as Van Gogh or Lady Gaga.

“I suggested someone paste tomato soup labels on their clothes as a salute to Andy Warhol,” laughed Rohall.

As an added incentive, anyone showing up in costume will receive two complimentary drinks from the cash bar.

People will have a chance to mingle as they graze on a variety of sumptuous hors d’oeuvres at various food stations.

There will be prizes for the most artful costumes although the categories have not yet been determined.

Striped Maple Hollow will provide the music throughout the night.

Their brand of Americana music leans heavily on folk, bluegrass and country music.

The band features two female singers, alternating lead and harmony; and two multi-instrumentalists, rotating between guitars, mandolin, banjo and blues harp.

For art lovers, the event also will feature live art being created and inspired by the night’s activities.

Artists Alan Rauch and Terry Smith are confirmed with others to be chosen. Attendees may bid on the pieces in a silent auction.

Proceeds benefit the programs and exhibits at Art Works.

Reservations are recommended.

Tickets cost $30 for individuals or $50 for a couple.

Tickets are available by visiting www.artworkscaya.eventbrite.com, calling 535-2020 or at the door on the evening of the event.
