Westmont Hilltop Recreation Commission is in the fun business and it’s doing what it does best for festivalgoers.
The commission is organizing its second annual Hilltop Days – Craft and Cruise Show, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 25-26 at The Ridge, 3984 Menoher Blvd., Route 271, near Pickin’ Chicken.
The event is free and open to the public. There will be a $1 parking fee.
“We want to showcase The Ridge while celebrating the end of summer,” said Fran Sivi of Upper Yoder Township, commission director.
The celebration has been expanded because of the success enjoyed in its initial year.
Activities will include an expansion of the children’s area, expanded food court, a basketball foul-shooting contest, a DJ, bingo and a large-basket raffle.
“Last year, we attracted about 50 cars to our cruise, but we expect to have a lot more this year because we have contacted all the area car clubs,” Sivi said.
Children’s activities will include a bouncy and a giant slide, as well as more games to entertain the youngsters.
“We have doubled our craft people from last year and we have 40 crafters and vendors to date,” she said.
Items to be sold include woodwork, birdhouses, home crafts, toys, jewelry and children’s accessories.
“New this year will be a food court located beneath a tent which will feature a wider variety of tasty treats,” Sivi said. “We will have traditional festival foods such as hamburgers and hot dogs, but we have added some interesting items such as walking tacos in a bag, ice cream, candy and baked goods.”
West Hills, Upper Yoder and Southmont police and fire companies will provide parking and demonstrations.
The Johnstown Fire Department will provide its Smoke House, which simulates what to do during a fire and teaches fire safety to children.
“This will be an opportunity for people to learn how to exit a burning structure safely,” Sivi said.
The Johnstown police also will be presenting a K9 demonstration.
A celebrity dunking booth will be available Aug. 25.
Westmont Hilltop and Bishop McCort Catholic high schools’ booster clubs as well as Westmont Hilltop Parent-Teacher Association will have booths, providing each group an opportunity to raise money.
“This event is intended to be great family fun on the last weekend before the schools go back in session,” Sivi said.
Proceeds benefit Westmont Hilltop Recreation Commission.
Donated nonperishable food items will be given to a local food pantry.
“We are asking for donations again because, last year, our food drive netted approximately 250 pounds of nonperishable food to help those in need,” Sivi said.
Sivi said a shuttle service from Westmont Hilltop High School parking lot to The Ridge will be operating every half hour during festival hours.
