JJ Grey & Mofro and special guests The Greyhounds will perform for Johnstown Area Heritage Association’s Summer Concert Series at 8 tonight at Peoples Natural Gas Park, 90 Johns St., downtown Johnstown.

Grey is on tour to promote his live DVD-CD two-disc set, “Brighter Days,” featuring smoldering swamp soul and funky southern rock.

Andrew Trube and Anthony Farrell of The Greyhounds have said their sound is Hall and Oates meets ZZ Top.

The duo played during the music festival in 2005.

Doors open at 7, and a cash bar will be available. Music begins at 8.

Tickets are $15 in advance plus handling fees and $22 at the door.

JAHA members are eligible for a 15 percent discount on tickets bought in advance.

 Tickets may be purchased at the Heritage Discovery Center by cash or check only.

Neighborhood jazz

The fifth annual Village Street Jazz and Blues Festival will be held from 1 p.m. to sundown Sunday along Village Street between Grove and Park avenues in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

There will be a variety of jazz styles performed by regional bands, and food will be offered for purchase from Village Street Café.

Some seating will be available, but those who attend should bring their own seats.

Community celebration

The fifth annual Richland Community Days will be held from 4 p.m. to midnight today and 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday at Schoolhouse Road and Theatre Drive, Richland Township.

The celebration will feature the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team, live music, crafts, food, a car cruise, parade, fireworks and children’s activities.

Admission is free.

Parking will be available at fields adjacent to the celebration  and at the township municipal building and elementary school.

Proceeds will benefit East Hills Recreation.

All’s fair

The 112th Somerset County Fair will be held Saturday through Aug. 25 at the fairgrounds at 7842 Mount Davis Road, Meyersdale.

Musical entertainment in the 4-H junior activities building will feature Glory Guys on Monday; Apostles Creed on Tuesday; Birdhouse on Wednesday; Shane & the Rockullos on Thursday; and Willing Vessels on Aug. 24.

The most popular shows are a semitruck pull at 7 p.m. Saturday; Figure 8 demo derby at 7:30 p.m. Monday; 4x4 mud bogging at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday; Dave Martin Rodeo at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday; 4x4 truck pull at 7 p.m. Aug. 24; and Jack Fullerton destruction derby at 6 p.m. Aug. 25.

One-price admission of $8 includes mechanical rides and grandstand shows. Children ages 2 and younger will be admitted free.

Parking at the grandstand is $2 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Magical concert

Singer/songwriter John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful will perform during a free concert Thursday at Peoples Natural Gas Park, 90 Johns St., downtown Johnstown.

Gates will open at 7:30 p.m.

The concert is part of the Founders’ Day celebration of The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies.

The Phoenix will provide food and beverages for purchase.

Johnny Cash Tribute Show featuring Terry Lee Goffee will be presented at 8 p.m. Saturday at Arcadia Theater, 1418 Graham Ave., Windber.

Car cruise

Cruise Class IV, sponsored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge No. 175, will be presented from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Elks parking lot, 330 Teaberry Lane, Geistown.

Music will be provided by DJs Denny and Brian Lynch, and picnic-style food will be available.

Registration is $5, and admission is free.

“SUDS: The Rocking ’60s Musical Soap Opera” will bubble into Mountain Playhouse, Jennerstown, today through Sunday.

Worthy causes

Help for Heroes! Richland Rumble Run will be held Saturday beginning at Richland American Legion Post 849, 390 Oakridge Drive, Richland Township.

Registration will open at 9:30 a.m., and riders will leave at 11.

The 97-mile dice run will benefit local veterans, and Dennis McKolosky is committee chairman.

The cost is $20 for each participant, which includes cash prizes, coffee and doughnuts, a T-shirt for the first 250 registrants and admission to a party at the post home, featuring food, adult beverages and a DJ.

The 11th annual horse show to benefit Windber Hospice will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Greater Johnstown Saddle Club grounds, Route 160, between Elton and Salix.

The show is hosted by the saddle club and the Golden Star Horse Farm.

A total of 22 timed events for the gaming classes will be held Saturday, with 44 pleasure classes on Sunday.

AmeriServ Free Summer Concerts at the Roxbury Bandshell will continue Sunday at the bandshell along Franklin Street in Johnstown.

Family fun

An annual festival will be held Saturday at Blacklick Community United Methodist Church, 1453 Bracken Road, Vintondale.

The meal at 6 p.m. at the church pavilion will feature chicken, hot sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs, potato, macaroni and pasta salads, baked beans, desserts and beverages. Guests will receive a choice of one meat, side dishes, dessert and beverage for $5.



A homecoming and picnic will be held today through Sunday at St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church, Hastings.

Hours are 6 p.m. to midnight today and 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday.

There will be live music, refreshments and children’s activities each day.

“Five2Five,” a 24-hour marathon book sale, will begin at 5 p.m. today and end at 5 p.m. Saturday at Chameleon bookstore, 144 Gazebo Park, downtown Johnstown.

Musicians and various artists are expected to perform at times during the event, which is free.

A Polish Picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 136 Hilltop Road, Lilly.

Entertainment will feature gospel with The Masters from noon to 1:30 p.m., country with Pop Harker’s Raging Slagg from 1:30 to 3:30 and 6:30 to 9 and polka with The Hallmarks from 3:30 to 6:30.

Delmont Area Concert Band will perform at 7 Sunday on the Diamond in Ligonier as part of a free series of Sunday evening band concerts sponsored by the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Mountain View Antique Tractor Show will be held Saturday at Johnstown Tractor Supply, 640 Galleria Drive.

There will be a parade at 11 a.m., kiddie tractor pull at 1 p.m. and tractor games at 2.

Performance venue

Magic and jazz will mix at the Venue of Merging Arts, 305 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Laurel Highlands Magic Club will present “A Date with Magic” from 7 to 10 tonight.

Running dirty

Registration is due Monday for the Filthy Fun Mud Run, which will be held Aug. 25 at Pine Springs Camp, 371 Pine Springs Camp Road, Jennerstown.

This 5K course has lots of winding and turning through thickly wooded paths, stream crossings and natural wetlands.

Children can get dirty at the Little ‘N’ Filthy Fun Runs, which will be held at 10:30 a.m. for  4- to 6-year-olds and 11:15 a.m. for 7- to 13-year-olds.

The fun runs will benefit Cradles to Crayons, which provides donated clothes, shoes, books and school supplies to homeless and low-income children.

There also will be a post-race festival.

Flood tours

 “Journey Around Lake Conemaugh” van tours will be held at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily through Aug. 26 at Johnstown Flood National Memorial, South Fork.

The one-hour tours will begin at the visitor center and travel to the north and south abutments of the South Fork Dam, as well as the clubhouse building.  

Reservations are encouraged, but not required.

Site programs

Several programs will be presented at Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, 10 miles west of Altoona off the Gallitzin exit of Route 22.  

Men of Steel concert with park ranger Gregory Zaborowski will be held at 8 pm. Saturday at the park amphitheater.

Park ranger Gregory Zaborowski and friends will educate about Pennsylvania’s working class heroes and villains through song and story.  

In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the Summit Level Visitor Center Theater.

Admission is $2.

A ranger-guided bike trip on the lower trail will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the lower trail head in Alfarata near Alexandria.

The tour will cover about 14 miles roundtrip along the railbed that follows the path of the Main Line Canal from Alfarata to Mount Etna Furnace.

 Participants should bring their own bike for this three-hour trip as well as dressing appropriately and bringing water and a snack.

The tour is free, but reservations are required.

Musical honor

The musical comedy “Woman of the Year” will be presented by the Valley Players of Ligonier beginning today at The Ligonier Theater, 208 W. Main St., Ligonier.

An opening night gala featuring hors d’oeuvres and champagne will be presented at 6:30 tonight.

Additional showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Aug. 24-25 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 26.

The play is the story of a nationally recognized TV news personality who is about to be named Woman of the Year.

Blues and Americana artist Dan Stevens will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday for the Bedford Arts Council at 137 E. Pitt St., Bedford.

Stevens, originally from Bellefonte, Centre County, is an acoustic blues artist based in Old Lyme, Conn., who performs an eclectic mix of blues, American roots music and originals.

Theater history

Local historian Michael Farrow will present a lecture on the 100-plus theaters which existed in the area over the last century at 6 p.m. Sunday at the rehearsal hall of Altoona Community Theater, 1213 12th St., Altoona.

The talk will stem from Farrow’s soon-to-be-published book, "Theatres of Altoona and Blair County."

 Farrow received the Blair County Historical Society’s Excellence in Preservation of County History and Heritage Award last year.

Urban art

“Then and Now,” an exhibit inspired by urban landscapes by New York native Susan Severson, will be on display through Sept. 29 at the Blair County Arts Foundation’s administrative office, 1212 12th Ave., Altoona.

Severson has 150 paintings in more than 90 collections throughout the United States.
