Book 'em | Area authors write on a variety of topics

Writers in the region have been busy penning a variety of books.

Mystery author Kathleen George, a native of Johnstown, will give a presentation on her latest book, “Hideout,” at noon Saturday at the Johnstown Flood Museum, 304 Washington St. in downtown Johnstown.

The police procedural is a sequel to “The Odds,” published in 2009, and involves Richard Christie of Pittsburgh Homicide investigating a late-night hit-and-run that claimed the life of a young woman.

George’s novels are set in Pittsburgh, and some include scenes set in Johnstown.

The event is free and open to the public, and a book signing will follow the presentation.

“Suicide Cap” by G.W. Riley of Johns-town is the fictional story of adventure and tragedy spanning more than 60 years. It involves a local legend of the mountain called Suicide Cap.

“Z-SAT: Zombie Survival Aptitude Test” by Casey B. Bassett of Johnstown will test a reader’s survival skills in the event of a zombie outbreak.

“Wolf Spirit: Native American Poetry” by B.A. Schry of Johnstown is a compilation of American Indian poems.

“Backlash: The Second American Revolution” by James Hockycko of Davidsville tells the author’s ideas on how to restore the traditional values upon which America was founded.

It is available for $15.90 at the author’s website, www.thebacklash.net.

“Memory of Love’s Embrace” by Diane Lynn Warner of Windber is the story of Virginia, a small-town girl who loses the love of her life.

The romance is available for $16.95 at www.publishamerica.net and $24.95 at www.amazon.com.

“Biscotti Are Not Just a Dessert Cookie But Also Something More” by Phyllis Santinoceto of Davidsville is a combination picture book and recipe collection.

“The Adventures of Sammie: The Rescue” by Tracey Lamonica of Boswell is a children’s picture book about a pound puppy named Sammie. It’s based on her dog’s real-life adoption story.

Mark Weakland of Hollsopple has published four new science books for children through Capstone Publishing.

They are “Bubbles Float, Bubbles Pop”; “Seeds Go, Seeds Grow”; “Magnets Push, Magnets Pull”; and “Gears Go, Wheels Roll.”

Weakland also has published “The Delicious Chocolate Donut,” a collection of poetry for adults and children, which was illustrated by Johnstown native Mike Owens.

“The Cambria and Indiana Railroad” by Colver native Jack Hill, now of Landenberg, Chester County, is a history of the short line that operated from 1904 to 1994.

“Sullivan’s Secret” by Robin Murphy of Sharpsburg, Md., formerly of Windber, is a paranormal mystery about a veterinarian on Sullivan’s Island, S.C., whose ability to see spirits returns after 18 years.

“Treasures From the Attic: My Father’s Letters, 1944-45, from the States and Aboard Ship in the Pacific” edited by Charles A. Welsh of Stuarts Draft, Va., is a summary of the more than 400 letters written by his father during World War II.

The elder Welsh was a former journalist who worked for The Tribune-Democrat and the Somerset Daily American and before starting a career with the Associated Press.

“Get Where You Want to Go: How to Achieve Personal and Professional Growth Through Marketing, Selling and Story Telling ” by David M. Mastovich of Pittsburgh takes a practical, real-world approach to help readers tell their stories, convey their ideas and maximize the impact of their message. He utilized success and failure stories to serve as teaching points.

Mastovich is a Johnstown native, brother of Mike Mastovich, a Tribune-Democrat sports reporter, and also writes a Sunday business column for The Tribune-Democrat.

He is president of Massolutions Inc., a strategic marketing firm based in Pittsburgh with an office in Johnstown.

“Lucy the Shy Elephant” by Michael Smajda of Harrisburg is a children’s story about an elephant that writes poetry secretively.

Smajda, formerly of Johnstown, also had his poem “Die-Hard Baseballer” accepted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s library and archive department in Cooperstown, N.Y.

His children’s book is available for $12.42 at amazon.com.

“How Does the Drill Know When to Stop” by Perry Conrad of Tyrone is the true story of his life-changing surgery in 2007 to control his symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

“The Girl on the Stairs: My Search for a Missing Witness to the Assassination of John F. Kennedy” by Barry Ernest of Harrisburg is the story of Victoria Adams, who was allegedly on the stairs of the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas the same time as Lee Harvey Oswald.

Ernest is an Altoona native and investigative reporter.

His book is available for $19.95 at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com.

“A Ray of Hope” by Karen Thompson Stewart of Dallas is the story of a young girl who is physically, mentally and emotionally abused by her alcoholic mother.

Stewart, a Johnstown native, wrote the book to raise awareness of abuse in all forms.

It is available for $12.95 on the author’s website, www.karensbooks.net.

Ronnie Ray Jenkins of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, has three fiction e-books available on amazon.com:

“Dark Sanctuary” tells of a time when the Second Amendment no longer exists and common men take a stand against a rogue government.

“The Flynn City Egg Man” is a mystery about an eccentric peddler who hopes to give an Appalachian town a memorable Easter but who ends up a murder suspect.

“The Flowers of Reminscence” is the story of a woman in a nursing home who doesn’t know how she got there or who she is, but her journal can help her solve the mystery.
