Super cruise | Car clubs revving up for show at The Galleria

There is more than one way to fight crime.

Crime Stoppers along with a number of car clubs will take part in the fourth annual Johnstown Galleria Super Cruise from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday on the gassy area near the main entrance to the mall’s food court in Richland Township.

An estimated 300 cars are expected to roll in for the event said George Cveykus, event coordinator and secretary of  Cover Hill Car Club.

“The one thing different about our cruise is that everyone is welcome to display their vehicle,” Cveykus said.

“While most are classic, vintage and hot rods, we welcome anyone who is proud to show their vehicle.”

All it takes is a $5 donation to park in the grass. Spectators are admitted free.

Along with Cover Hill, four other clubs will participate in the rain or shine event.

Members of Johnstown Street Survivors, Laurel Highlands Mopar Club, Total Kaos Car Club and Portage Area Cruisers Car Club will take part in the show.

“We will award dash plaques to the first 200 participants,” Cveykus said.

“We also will be giving away some goodie bags while supplies last.”

Organizers expect to attract street rods, muscle cars, customs, tuners, antiques and motorcycles.

There also will be door prizes, 50/50 chances, a Chinese auction, a display of Richland Township Fire Department equipment and a small military display.

“We also will have Conemaugh’s emergency helicopter, and a variety of food vendors,” Cveykus said.

“There will be a nice selection of ethnic foods, pizza and other festival fare such as hamburgers and hot dogs.”

Music will be provided by  DJ Bob Weimann, a member of several car clubs.

The participating car clubs have teamed up with Crime Stoppers to sponsor the event.

Proceeds go to Crime Stoppers to help the nonprofit continue to offer rewards to capture lawbreakers.

“We will be distributing pamphlets and let people know how they can help,” said Gary Martin, Crime Stoppers president.

“The community is our greatest asset in giving us the information we need to fight crime,” Martin said.

Cveykus said the cruise has grown each year.

“By partnering with Crime Stoppers, we will be able to have a good time while contributing to a good cause,” he said.
