The surf is up as the members of Papa Doo Run Run prepare to take a Johnstown audience on a musical journey of sun, surf, cars and girls.
The music of The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean will conjure up visions of free and easy summers on the beach during a concert at 8 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center in Richland Township.
“These guys are classic performers who deliver an incredible show,” said Mike Bodolosky, arts center executive director.
“I recommend that people dress casual, and it’s one concert that if a man is wearing a Hawaiian shirt, he won’t stand out.”
Papa Doo Run Run has been performing continuously since 1965. All their members have performed and recorded with Jan & Dean and The Beach Boys.
Papa’s first single on RCA, “Be True To Your School” made the Top 40 charts nationally, and No. 1 in California.
The band has been working continuously for more than four decades, and on their own, they’ve released 10 albums and a dozen singles, and earned two gold records and a Grammy nomination.
“What separates this group from others is its tight harmony, exceptional guitar playing and an unmatched style and presentation,” Bodolosky said.
Papa’s high energy, highly interactive show features classic rock.
“By interactive, I’m guaranteeing this will get people on their feet and singing along with these timeless hits,” Bodolosky said.
In addition to “Be True To Your School,” the playlist includes such classics as “Surfer Girl,” Surfin’ Safari,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” “409,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Wipe Out,” “Surfin’ USA” and “Kokomo.”
But Bodolosky said the audience shouldn’t be surprised if the group shifts gears and plays classic Motown, rock ’n’ roll or disco.
The group also had an unprecedented 15-year run as the “Celebrity House Band” at Disneyland from 1975-90.
“It’s a great concert to start the season, and it’s also homecoming weekend at Pitt-Johnstown,” Bodolosky said.
He said the California sound is timeless and transcends generations.
“The resurgence of the surfing sound in the ’80s and ’90s, brought a younger audience into the fold,” Bodolosky said.
“To confirm their longevity, the group has performed at eight Super Bowls, two inaugurations, two World Fairs and two Olympics.”
Additionally, they appeared in, and recorded the soundtrack album for the CBS-TV movie “Deadman’s Curve.”
Papa Doo Run Run is who The Beach Boys call when they need someone to “fill in” in their band.
Through the years, Papa Doo Run Run has appeared in concert with such luminaries as Roy Orbison, Fleetwood Mac, Kenny Loggins, Chicago and Jimmy Buffett to name a few.
Most recently they have been performing live with symphony orchestras around the country.
In 2007, Papa Doo Run Run was honored to be inducted into the Northern California-Silicon Valley Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
