Annual Girl Scout cookie sales have kicked off in region

Girl Scouts who sell Thin Mints and Samoas are smart cookies.

They are learning life skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

“This will help them the rest of their lives,” said Cori Begg, Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania promotions and advertising manager.

Door-to-door sales began Friday and will continue until Jan. 25.

Cookie booths will be set up in shopping malls, grocery stores and other businesses from Feb. 25 through March 13.

“They set up a table in front of a market,” Begg said. “This way, they come in contact with more people and are in a safer environment.”

A cookie locator on the Girl Scout council’s website at www.gswpa.org will allow potential customers to enter a ZIP code and find a booth close to them.

“It will be activated in February after the door-to-door sales are over,” Begg said.

Cookies ordered from door-to-door sales will be delivered from Feb.17-24.

Prices are $3.50 a box.

Cookies also can be purchased at the Johnstown Girl Scouts office, 612 Locust St., beginning Feb. 25.

Kim Garman, a leader with Girl Scout Troop 40065, said her Scouts, ages 11-17, look forward to the annual event.

“Scouting isn’t just for little girls,” Garman said. “Selling cookies teaches them leadership development, teamwork and service. As their service project last year, they had a cookie booth at SeniorLIFE and dressed up as cookies and did activities with the seniors.”

Garman said selling cookies also teaches her girls excellent communication skills and how to approach people.

“They learn teamwork because they have a common goal,” Garman said. “They have to figure out how many boxes they want to sell and what goal they want to use the money for.”

The cookie lineup is the same as last year’s: Thin Mints; Do-Si-Dos, an oatmeal-peanut butter cookie sandwich; Samoas, a mix of caramel, coconut and chocolate; Tag-Alongs, a peanut butter-topped cookie dipped in chocolate; Dulce De Leche, featuring caramel chips; Lemon Chalet Creams; and the shortbread Trefoil.

Begg said the Thank U Berry Munch, cookies filled with cranberries and white fudge chips, which were introduced last year, have proven popular.

“They’re good with coffee or tea,” she said.

“I like the name. It’s giving thanks to the leaders, the consumer and the community at large.”

Begg said more than 35,000 girls in Grades K-12 in the 27 counties of the western Pennsylvania council participate in cookie sales.

Proceeds from the sales fund service projects, purchase troop supplies and provide program opportunities.

Yes.
No.
I don't care because I never travel on those tolled roadways.
