Religion in brief | Bishop to celebrate Mass for students

The Most Rev. Mark L. Bartchak, bishop of the Altoona-Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese, will celebrate an outdoor Mass for students entering or returning to college at 7 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of the Alleghenies Shrine in Loretto.

The bishop will offer a special blessing to the students and present them with a gift.

Fellowship will follow the Mass.

In case of inclement weather, the Mass will be celebrated inside the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel in Loretto.

Series continues at Westmont UM

Pastor Kevin Rea will continue his summer sermon series titled “Meet the Royals” with “Ahab and Jezebel: Payday Comes Someday” during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at Westmont United Methodist Church, 1428 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown.

Sunday school for all ages will begin at 9:30.

Pastor Rick Horner will begin a sermon series on the struggles of Kind David during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Conemaugh Grace Brethren Church, Oak and Second streets in East Conemaugh.

Zion Lutheran observing Communion

Liturgy of Holy Communion will be celebrated during the 9 a.m. Sunday worship service at Zion Lutheran Church, 613 Locust St., downtown Johnstown.

The Gospel reading will be taken from John 6:24-35.

Adult study will be held at 10:30.

A midweek Liturgy of Holy Communion will be observed at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Memorial Chapel.

Vinco Brethren books guest speaker

Tim Rigby will speak during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Vinco Brethren Church, 123 Adams Ave., Mineral Point.

The title of the sermon will be “What a Difference a Prayer Makes.”

Pastor to speak on 'Forgiveness'

The Rev. William Wenger, pastor of Moxham Church of the Brethren, 536 Grove Ave., Johnstown, will deliver the message “The Forgiveness of Sins” during the 10:10 a.m. Sunday worship service at the church. Scripture will be read from Acts 10:43.

The children’s story will be told by John Robertson.

Special music will be provided.

Sunday school begins at 9.

Elder Albert Stinson of New Beginning Ministries in McKeesport, Allegheny County, will lead Abundant Life Ministry’s summer revival at 7:15 p.m. Friday at the Holiday Inn, Sanoma Salon, 250 Market St., downtown Johnstown.

Maple Spring pastor to deliver message

The Rev. Guy Myers will speak about “Facing Life With God’s Help,” with Scripture from Psalm 46:1-11 during the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday services at Maple Spring Church of the Brethren, 106 Spring Road, Hollsopple.

Joanne Berkey will have the children’s story.

Connie Zanoni will provide special music.

Sunday school for all ages will begin at 9:40.

Pastor Charles H. Zimmerman will deliver the message “Poverty Goes When You Clean Your Plate” during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Community Open Door Church, Menoher Boulevard and Luzerne Street, Johnstown.

Cindy Wilson will bring the children’s message.

Canned foods are being collected for the Food Bank.

Lighthouse to hold camp meetings

The Lighthouse, Morning Star Ministries, will hold its summer camp meetings at 7 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday at the church, 4886 Route 240 Highway, Cherry Tree.

The theme is “Experiencing the Atmosphere of the Anointing.”

Evangelist Curtis Silcox will speak. His wife, Paula Silcox, will minister in song.

First Lutheran to hold service outdoors

First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine St., Johnstown, will hold an outdoor service with Communion at 5:30 tonight in the park behind the church.

The musicians will be Matthew Beckman, Brian Wechtenhiser and Paul Stephenson.

A Communion service will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the sanctuary.

Pastor Eleanor Abarno will continue to examine John 6 passages about Jesus as the bread of life.

Pastor Len Findley will speak about “The Meaning of Life,” with Scripture from Ephesians 4:1-16, during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Ferndale United Methodist Church, 701 Vickroy Ave., Johnstown.

George Kolesar is the worship assistant. Jack and Lundy Feathers are the greeters. Jane Buxbaum is the nursery helper. Kaylee Antesberger is the acolyte.

Findley also will speak at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Faith United Methodist Church, 369 Glessner Road, Johnstown.

Beulah pastor: ‘Me and My Sister’

The Rev. Jeffrey Popson will deliver the message “Me and My Sister,” based on Luke 10:38-42, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Beulah United Methodist Church, 716 Bedford St., Johnstown.

Praise worship will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday school at 9:25.

Van transportation will be available.

Oakland UM hosting block party today

A free block party will be held from noon to 5 p.m. today at Oakland United Methodist Church, 1504 Bedford St., Johnstown.

There will be food and refreshments, live music, children and youth activities and a community yard sale.

The Rev. Wayne D. Sedei will deliver the message “Can You Believe That!” based on  John 6:25-59, during the 8 a.m. praise service and 10:30 worship service on Sunday at Roxbury St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 160 Derby St., Johnstown.

Second Presbyterian to observe Communion

Holy Communion will be observed during the 10 a.m. Sunday service at Second Presbyterian Church, 565 Park Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

“Who Am I, Right Now?” will be the topic of the Rev. Art Moffat’s sermon. Scripture readings will be taken from Colossians 3:9-10.

The choir will sing “You Are the Bread,” directed by Sarah Pruss.

Moxham Lutheran planning celebration

A vacation Bible school celebration will be held during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at Moxham Lutheran Church, 500 Park Ave., Johnstown.

Fellowship and discussion will follow the service.

Wednesday worship will be held at 4 p.m.

A free concert featuring the Smooth Sound will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday in the church parking lot.

“Plugging In” will be the topic of the Rev. Ed Schoeneck’s Sunday sermon at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 Grove Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown. Scripture will be taken from John 15:1-8.

A contemporary service and adult Sunday school will begin at 9:15 a.m.

Music will be provided by Eclectic Praise Band, directed by Denise Baldwin. Fellowship will follow at 10:15.

A traditional worship service will begin at 10:45.

Communion will be served during both services.

Church choir commissions song

The Chancel Choir of Westmont Presbyterian Church, 601 Luzerne St., Johnstown, will sing “The Whisper” in memory of Carl B. Miller, director of music for 20 years, during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday service of Communion. Nancy Miller and the Rev. Douglas Stevens will share the dedication.

Pastor Jim Gay will speak about “TWO-Gather, Again!” during the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services at Greater Johnstown Christian Fellowship, 3429 Elton Road.

Gay also will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday. His topic will be “Elijah ... The Prayer of the Prophet.”

Connections Café will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Children and youth will meet at 7.

The church family picnic will  be held Aug. 12.
