Symphony to stage concert of revered masters

JOHNSTOWN — Johnstown Symphony Orchestra will present “Past and Present Masters” for the second concert of its subscription season.

The show, which will feature past composers Stravinsky and Grieg and contemporary composer John Williams, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center in Richland Township.

JSO will perform “Divertimento” from Stravinsky’s “The Fairy’s Kiss” and Grieg’s “Piano Concerto in A minor,” featuring guest pianist Ran Dank.

“This concert is full of romance, bravado and excitement,” said Brooke Welsh, JSO executive director. “I am certain that the audience will fall in love with pianist Ran Dank, and become enchanted by John Williams’ favorites such as ‘Superman’ and ‘Star Wars’ selections.”

Organizers say the concert makes a great date night, family function, corporate event or a fun night out for youngsters.

Maestro Istvan Jaray is particularly delighted to offer a concert celebrating the genius of an American composer.

“In all my decades with the symphony, the majority of the music came from European composers,” he said. “The pendulum has swung in the other direction with European orchestras performing music from American composers such as Williams. His music has touched not only everyone in the United States, but also around the world.”

In addition, Jaray said the audience may enjoy one of the most romantic piano concertos played by an outstanding young pianist.

Dank has appeared as soloist with Phoenix; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Hilton Head, S.C.; and Pensacola, Fla., symphonies, Cleveland Orchestra as a laureate of the Cleveland International Competition, and Orquesta de Valencia in Spain.

Dank has been presented by Washington Performing Arts Society’s prestigious Hayes Piano Series at Kennedy Center, the Chopin Festival in

Warsaw, Poland, and Finland’s Mantta Festival, where his all-Liszt recital was broadcast on Finnish National Radio.

“We have discovered that there are many brilliant musicians who are motivated to play,” Jaray said.

“We have had many artists who have appeared in Johns-town who have gone on to become highly acclaimed performers who are getting 10 times more than we could now pay.”

By having guests artists who are climbing their way up the performance ladders, Jaray said it assures the audience that it will hear an outstanding performance.

“The audience can expect their best because these performers are eager and building careers,” Jaray said. “I urge everyone to attend and not miss this truly enjoyable concert.”

The performance also marks the first time that JSO has implemented its share-the-music program.

Welsh elaborated on the program.

“This program allows corporations that sponsor concerts but are unable to use their tickets to donate them back to the JSO,” she said.

The JSO will then distribute the complimentary tickets to social-service agencies.

Corporations or individuals may also choose to donate money to purchase tickets for social-service agencies.

Tickets will be distributed to such organizations as Alternative Community Resource Program, Arts in Healing, Beginnings Inc., Goodwill Industries and Learning Lamp.

Welsh encouraged any social-service agency that would like tickets, or corporations that would like to donate to the share-the-music program, to call 535-6738.

Ticket prices for the concert are $10 for students and $25, $30 and $35 for adults.
