Industrial images will be focus of art exhibition

JOHNSTOWN — There will be some familiar sites in the newest exhibit at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Johnstown.

“An Industrial Revolution: The Photography of Amelia Patsy,” which features 55 gelatin silver prints and cyanotypes chronicling much of western Pennsylvania’s industrial heritage, opens Jan. 14 and will be on view through July 6 in the Richland Township gallery.

A gelatin silver print uses light, angles, shadows and shapes to demonstrate a mastery of the art form. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that gives the picture a cyan-blue appearance.

Patsy, a resident of Pittsburgh, began working in black- and-white film photography in 2004.

Her hometown of Erie provided a rich industrial landscape, which eventually became the artist’s canvas.

After receiving a degree in fine arts from Alfred University, Patsy continued her studies in Florence, Italy.

Florence also provided the artist an opportunity to broaden her photographic skills by capturing the human condition in black and white.

While some of those works are included in this show, the exhibition’s primary focus is western Pennsylvania’s industrial history.

Included in the exhibition are several Johnstown landmarks.

The exhibition captures part of America’s industrial heritage and is an ideal fit for an old steel town like Johnstown, according to a press release.

Patsy’s use of black-and-white photography has taken the rusted hulls of industry and transformed them into works of art.

The museum will host a reception with the artist from 6 to 8 p.m. April 1. The public is invited free of charge.

Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 269-7234.

The museum is open to the public free of charge.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
