Learning Lamp to host art classes

JOHNSTOWN — Saturday art classes at The Learning Lamp will continue with a new series.

Sessions will feature collage, needlework, puppetry and printmaking.

All classes will be held at The Learning Lamp art studio, 2025 Bedford St. in Stonycreek Township.

Lisa Stofko, communications specialist for The Learning Lamp, said the Saturday art classes have been held for two years. Average attendance is 10-15 children per age group.

“During the last session, we had a class on clay, and they absolutely loved getting their hands into it,” Stofko said.

Parents can choose from three different series of classes offering three sessions each.

“Make a Face,” which will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, will allow children to experiment with different techniques of making portraits, including media such as collage and needlework.

“Stick a Sock in It Puppet Making,” which will be held Feb. 16 and 23 and March 2, will engage children in crafting and performing with puppets using materials such as socks and sticks.

“Print That,” which will be held March 9, 16 and 23, will explore the world of printmaking as children use found objects such as stamps.

Classes will be taught by Trish Dodson, a certified art teacher who wants to get children excited about art.

“I’m looking forward to teaching the importance of artistic expression to several different age groups,” Dodson said. “It’s going to be a wonderful experience for the kids to take these art classes and bring their creativity to the worlds of printmaking, puppetry and portraiture.”

Children in preschool and kindergarten will meet from 10:15 to 11 a.m., those in grades 1-3 will be in session from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and those in grades 4-6 will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Tuition for preschool through third grade is $25, and tuition for grades 4-6 is $38.

Tuition includes the cost of supplies and all three sessions for each art series.
