The look is romantic when it comes to hairstyles for the prom.
John Vizza, owner of Salon Vizions, 1758 Lyter Drive, Lower Yoder Township, said girls’ hairstyles are down, falling into waves and curls.
“It’s more Rita Hayworth,” Vizza said. “From the ear down, it’s curlier, and the top is wavy.”
Vizza has seen the looser, romantic Victorian look in hairstyles in his travels to New York, with nothing tight and plastered.
“It’s a return to waves – waves below the shine line, which is at the corner of the eye,” Vizza said. “At the top of the ear, it falls into a looser curl. It’s very pretty. Hair picks up a shine when it’s down.”
Vizza said girls look in magazines and the Internet for hair ideas, always keeping an eye on what’s hot on the red carpet.
Vizza said prom hair has been up and formal for the past few seasons, but it is coming down now, falling into curls that separate into ribbons.
“If it is up, we’re seeing a classic French twist,” Vizza said.
A hair transformation at Vizza’s salon costs between $28 and $30.
“We have a package with skin, nails and brows,” Vizza said.
At Makin’ Waves Beauty Salon, 1513 Scalp Ave., Richland Township, owner Kathy Glattke also is seeing more free-flowing tresses.
“It’s like Woodstock and punk rock collided,” Glattke said. “It’s a softer curl, not uptight. It’s romantic.”
Hair is sometimes half up and half down, but Glattke isn’t seeing any high updos.
“It looks like you did it yourself, but we do it better,” Glattke said. “It mimics the 1980s Madonna curl.”
Prom hairstyles cost about $34 at Makin’ Waves.
For hair ornamentation, Glattke is seeing a big, soft flower behind the ear that coordinates with a girl’s dress.
