A free Community Harvest Feast will be served at 6 p.m. Friday at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 700 Park Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

Those sponsoring the feast, Moxham United Methodist Churches Ministry and the Witnesses to Hunger Committee, will accept food donations for local food banks.

Prior to the dinner, organizers will provide a sneak preview of an art exhibit that will be on display in February at the Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd. in Westmont.

Described as a moving exhibit, it conveys a powerful message about poverty and hunger across the United States.

The exhibit consists of photographs taken by 40 women in Philadelphia to document their daily lives of living at the poverty level and being in the welfare system.

Mariana Chilton, a professor at Drexel University’s School of Public Health, distributed digital cameras to the women so they could tell their stories through a process she refers to as Photo Voices.

Witnesses to Hunger committee member Rachel Allen will talk about the importance of bringing awareness about the hunger issue to our own community.

“We hope that through the Harvest Feast and the upcoming Witnesses to Hunger exhibit that we can engage the community in finding ways to make it possible to break through the cycle of poverty in our area,” Allen said.

Another committee member, Becky Bickford, will lead West African dance performances and facilitate a community circle.
