“An Evening of Classics” will be presented by Max Fedore at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Fedore will be joined by pianist Dan Philibin and vocalist Charlotte Aubrey for a program of classical piano solos and opera arias.

Empty nest

The domestic comedy “Alone Together” will be presented Tuesday through July 22 at Mountain Playhouse, Jennerstown.

Book bargains

The Friends of the Cambria County Library Inclined to Read Bookstore will feature all types of cookbooks on sale for $1 for the month of July at Cambria County Library, 248 Main St., downtown Johnstown.

A celebration of the second anniversary of the bookstore will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 23 featuring cookbooks and other paperback books priced at five for $1 and a variety of other genres for $1 a book. 

Bookstore hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

  • The Johnstown Reed Band will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richland Towers in Richland Township.
  • The Civic Concert Band will perform as part of the free Summer Concerts on the Green at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the grounds of Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.
  • The Kiski Valley Community Band will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday on the Diamond in Ligonier as part of a free series of Sunday evening band concerts sponsored by the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce.
  • The Somerset County Community Band will perform as part of the free Summer Music on the Square concert series sponsored by the Pennsylvania Consort at 2 p.m. Sunday at the gazebo at Pitt and Penn Streets in downtown Bedford.

Reading dreams

A summer reading program will be held through July 28 at Windber Public Library, 1909 Graham Ave., Windber. 

The theme is “Dream Big – Read!” and special story times will be held at 10:30 a.m. today and July 20. 

Children in preschool through Grade six as of May are invited to participate. 

Registration is required, and readers are asked to read as many books as they can during the program. 

Tokens received for each book read will be entered into a prize drawing.

Faith day

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown will sponsor Faith Day Sunday at Peoples Natural Gas Field, Altoona.

Gates will open at 2:30 p.m. for a Mass celebrated on the field at 3 p.m. by Bishop Mark L. Bartchak, Bishop emeritus Joseph V. Adamec and priests of the diocese.

A Parade of Parishes, which spotlights churches in the diocese, also will be held.

The Altoona Curve will play the Binghamton Mets at 6.

The Rev. Brian R. Saylor, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Altoona, will sing the national anthem.

Bartchak will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The Rev. Alan E. Thomas, pastor of Resurrection Roman Catholic Church, Johnstown, will sing “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch.

Messages from priests and seminarians will play on the big screen throughout the game.

Between the Mass and the ball game, carnival-style games sponsored by the diocese will be available for children.

Game tickets are required for entrance.

Those who attend Mass must enter through the VIP entrance, but only season-ticket holders will be permitted to park in the VIP lot.

Irish celebration

The second annual Irish Festival will be held today through Sunday at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, near Champion.

Hours are 4 to 9 p.m. today, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

A fireworks display will be set off after sundown today.

Featured entertainment will include the Rebel Heart Irish Dancers and The Screaming Orphans, four sisters from Donegal, Ireland, who sing high-energy pop songs as well as rousing traditional Irish tunes.

The Irish Market Village will feature hand-crafted arts, jewelry, kilts, clothing, puzzles and a variety of souvenirs, and there also will be a children’s village.

Traditional Irish entertainment will include Corned Beef and Curry, Terry Griffith, Red Hand Paddy, Cueball, Mike Gallagher, Matthew Craig and Kerry Tipper Band, Glengarry Bhoys, Dignam, Tedesco and Ruefle and David Shelow.

Authentic Irish cuisine will feature bread pudding, shepherd’s pie and Irish sausage.

The Kegs ’n’ Eggs Brunch on Sunday at the Slopeside will feature Irish entrees and desserts.

Admission is $7 for adults, and children younger than age 12 will be admitted free.

Tickets can be purchased at the festival gates, and parking is free.

Nature’s call

Junior Ranger Nature Discovery Days will be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon each Saturday through July 28 at the picnic area at Johnstown Flood National Historic Site, Sidman.

The free events are for children ages 7 to 10, and a parent or guardian must accompany each child.

Children should bring their lunches.

Reservations are required, and there is a limit of 12 children per Saturday.

Bike hike

A ranger-guided bike trip on the West Penn Trail, sponsored by Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Saltsburg Trailhead on Salt Street, across from the fire hall in Saltsburg.

The eight-mile, round-trip tour will allow participants to view evidence of the old Main Line Canal and learn about its important role in the growth of the region.

The tour will be held rain or shine and will last 2 ½ hours.

Participants should bring their own bike, water, snack and dress appropriately.

The tour is free, but reservations are required.

Flood tours

“Journey Around Lake Conemaugh” van tours will be held at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily through Aug. 26 at Johnstown Flood National Memorial, South Fork.

The one-hour tours will begin at the visitors center and travel to the north and south abutments of the South Fork Dam, as well as the clubhouse building. 

Reservations are encouraged, but not required.

The tour is included with park admission.

Feelin’ groovy

The Friday Night Music Series, sponsored by Bedford County Arts Council, will be held from 7 to 10 tonight at the arts center, located in the Anderson House, 137 E. Pitt St., Bedford.

The evening will have a ’70s theme.

The host will be the band Washington Slept Here.

Special guests will be Jeff Seitz, Mark Diehl, Miranda Shank and Troy Daugherty.

A $5 donation will be accepted at the door.

Sculptures and wax

“Emerging Spirits,” a sculpture exhibit by Dorie Sheridan, and “One Time, One Place,” an art exhibit by Carol Brode, will be on display Saturday through July 27 at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Sheridan’s sculptures have human form and inner spirit, while Brode’s exhibit features encaustic, which is painting with hot wax.

Opening receptions for both exhibits will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Healing art

A reception for “The Art of Healing Exhibition: Reflections 2012” will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Johnstown, in the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Admission is free, but reser-vations are requested by Tuesday.

The exhibition, which will remain on view through Aug. 10, features drawings, paintings, collage and woodcarvings created by patients of the museum’s Healthcare Partnership Program residencies at the John P. Murtha Neuroscience and Pain Institute.

Realistic paintings

Reservations are due today for a lunch a l’art program with exhibiting artist William DeBernardi, which will be held at noon Thursday at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley, One Boucher Lane and Route 711 South in Ligonier.

“People, Places and Things: Works by William DeBernardi” will be on display through Aug. 12.

The exhibition features 136 oil paintings by the renowned Pittsburgh artist, who primarily focuses on portraits, still lifes and nocturnal landscapes.

The cost is $13 or $12 for SAMA members.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. weekends.

Artistic evening

A Blue Monday program will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Monday at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona, in the Brett Building, 1210 11th Ave., downtown Altoona.

Music will be provided by Tom McCarty, who plays Americana, bluegrass and roots music, and Mountain City Grass, a traditional bluegrass group from central Pennsylvania.

The evening will feature a tour of the museum’s latest exhibition, “From Individual to Universal: The Art of Philip Brulia and Evgeny Krayushkin.”

Brulia’s work is focused on visual detail.

Krayushkin is primarily focused on the intellectual process.

Flora and fauna

A multimedia, multiartist exhibit featuring things that walk, crawl, fly or flutter will be on display through Aug. 4 at the Bedford County Arts Center, located in the Anderson House, 1376 E. Pitt St., Bedford.

A live exhibit of flora, and perhaps fauna, will be on display Saturday and Sunday.

An artists reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
