Events | Neighborhood party



Cambria City Ethnic Festival will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. today, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday along Chestnut Street in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Participating venues include St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 411 Power St.; Holy Cross Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church, 711 Chestnut St.; Resurrection Roman Catholic Church, 324 Chestnut St.; Venue of Merging Arts at the former St. George Church at 305 Chestnut St.; Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave.; and Ace’s, 316 Chestnut St.

Musical entertainment will feature Jerry Intihar, Johnstown Button Box, Rosie and the Jammers, Jimmy Lamb Trio, Michael O’Brian Band, Ribbon Grass, Harold Betters, Tree, Full Kilt and YUM.

Ethnic food will include haluski, kielbasa, halupki, pierogi, palacinky, stuffed cabbage, German potato salad, bratwurst, potato pancakes and lamb sandwiches and dinners.

Other fare will feature hot wings, hot dogs, hamburgers, regular and sweet potato fries, pizza, barbecue and pulled pork sandwiches, hot sausage, roast pork loin sandwiches, fried sauerkraut and ham potpie with homemade noodles.

For dessert, there will be Hungarian doughnuts, gobs, apple dumplings, ice cream and funnel cakes.

Parking is available on the street and at parking lots at SeniorLIFE and behind the Sheetz convenience store on Broad Street.

During the festival, an open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wagner-Ritter House and Garden along Broad Street.

Admission will be free to the house, which tells the story of a working-class immigrant family who lived and worked in Cambria City during the late 1800s.

All’s fair

The 119th Cambria County Fair will be held Sunday through Sept. 11 at the fairgrounds in Ebensburg.

Mike Albert’s Ultimate Tribute to Elvis Presley kicks off the entertainment at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Live musical entertainment will be continuous beginning at 2 p.m. Monday when local bands Ghostown Revelry, American Made Soul Grenade, Rik Golden Band and Three perform.

High school band night at 7 Tuesday will feature as many as 12 bands, and an Orlo truck pull will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Tony Peterson’s Hell Drivers will tear up the track at 7 p.m. Thursday, with small-car demolition at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 and big-car demolition at 2 p.m. Sept. 11.

A one-price ticket for $8 includes parking, rides, grandstand shows, midway and livestock barns.

From Tuesday through Sept. 10, there will be a free gate from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but those wishing to ride or see a grandstand show must pay regular admission.

There will be an 11 p.m. curfew for those younger than 18.



The 148th Indiana County Fair will continue today and Saturday at the fairgrounds in Indiana.

Grandstand shows include high school band night, limited pro stock and smoker series tractors, big rig semis, a demolition derby and stock-semi, triaxle dump and 4x4 truck pull.

The price of admission is $8.

Family fun

The 2010 Forest Hills Labor Day Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Berwind Wayside Festival Park grounds on Locust Street in St. Michael.

For the second year, Adams Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 will be in charge of the event.

The fire company will hold a breakfast buffet from 7 to 11 a.m. each day at the fire station across the street from the park, and a bingo tent will be sponsored by the fire company’s auxiliary.

There will be more than 20 food vendors and 85 craft booth exhibitors.

Entertainment will range from local bands and musical groups to an Elvis impersonator and numerous dance groups.

The highlight of the weekend will be a fireworks show at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Admission and parking are free.

Artsy festival

The 40th Log House Arts Festival will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.

More than 100 traditional craftsmen will display their wares.

Crafts will include pottery, jewelry, metal sculptures and stained glass.

Balloon artist Paul Marsh will create critters and crazy hats from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and Johnstown Spiderman will make an appearance from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Food will include apple dumplings, gobs, pigs in the blanket, kielbasa and sauerkraut, haluski, pierogi, funnel cakes, Chinese fare, kettle korn, pizza and pulled pork.

Shuttle service will be provided by The Party Bus from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday from the Conemaugh parking lot on Menoher Boulevard.

Gospel gala

The 25th annual Fall Harvest Gospel Music Festival will be held today through Monday at Camp Harmony, 1414 Plank Road, Hooversville.

Singing will begin at 7 tonight and 1 p.m. Saturday through Monday.

There will be 32 gospel groups and soloists from Florida, Missouri, Delaware, Arkansas, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Kid’s Korner, an adult-supervised child craft activity program, will be open the entire weekend.

The festival will be held inside, but lawn chairs are needed for seating.

Cruisin’ car show

The third annual “Cruisin’ the Flood City” car show will start at noon Saturday on the streets surrounding Central Park in downtown Johnstown.

Laurel Highlands Mopar Club sponsors the car show, which has no registration fees, judging or trophies.

The show is open to all makes, models and years of cars, trucks and motorcycles.

There will be music all day with Walt “The Mopar Music Man” McClelland, and food and beverages will be available for purchase at downtown restaurants.

A portion of the proceeds raised through 50-50 tickets, a Chinese auction and a basket raffle will benefit the YWCA of Greater Johnstown.

True-life drama

“Tuesdays With Morrie” will be onstage through Sept. 11 at Cresson Lake Playhouse, 279 Shapiro Road near Loretto.

Curtain times are 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, with a matinee at 2 Sunday.

The drama is the true story of journalist Mitch Albom and his former college professor, Morrie Schwartz, a terminally ill man facing his own mortality.

Tickets are $17 for adults and $10 for students with school identification.

Hometown happening

Vintondale Homecoming Celebration will be held Saturday and Sunday at Vintondale Park on Park Street.

There will be music, food and games.

The Conniptions will perform at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

An app for that

Auditions for (un)apologetic productions’ “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the activities center across from Village Street Café in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

 The imaginative new comedy by playwright Sarah Ruhl involves an incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet cafe, a stranger at the next table who has had enough and a dead man with a lot of loose ends.

It is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world.

The cast will include men and women of various ages, and those who come for an audition should bring a prepared monologue.

The performance will be presented in mid-November.

Beat goes on

A drum circle will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Those interested in joining the circle do not need experience in music to participate.

Facilitator Rachel Allen is trained in West African, Middle Eastern and many other cultural traditions.

The cost is $5 per person.

Great skate

Rock ’n’ Skate ice skating sessions will be held every Friday and Saturday through May at North Central Recreation Center,  Route 422 in Ebensburg near the Admiral Peary Vo-Tech and the Central Cambria schools. 

The first two sessions are scheduled between 6 and 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday.

All sessions are open to the public, and skate rentals are available. 

Admission is $4, and skate rentals are $3.

Patchwork parade

Quilts made by Salix Stitchers will be on display through Tuesday at Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.

In addition to full-size quilts, the show will include wall hangings, vests and jackets and a quillow, a quilt that is folded into a pillow.

Bold abstracts

“If Picasso Drips, I Drip,” a solo exhibition by Mona Wiley of Upper Yoder Township, will be on display through Sept. 25 at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Wiley’s work is abstract, done in bold, upbeat colors.

A gallery tour of Wiley’s works will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with a free workshop of Wiley demonstrating her painting process at 2.

Children up to age 16 will be able to sign up to paint at 3.
