    Vincent Van Gogh. The name conjures up images of bold, thick, swirly lines and stories of a man embroiled in deep turmoil.

    In an exhibit currently showing at the Philadelphia Museum of Art titled “Van Gogh Up Close” through May 6, 46 of his paintings from the final four years of his life are on display, verifying his mastery of color and intensity, both in his professional and personal life.

    Only two months before Windber’s Arcadia Theater opened its doors, Warren G. Harding was inaugurated as the 29th president of the United States. Built in 1921 by Berwind-White Coal Co. for its mining employees and their families, the theater soon became a hub of entertainment that included vaudeville shows, live stage productions, silent films, and was among the first theaters in the region to show talking pictures.

    Seventeen members of the board of directors at Arcadia Theater meet at 5:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the theater at 1418 Graham Ave., Windber. Vice chairman Al Christ, a board member for more than 10 years, said the meetings are usually well attended.

  • Arcadia finds niche by offering variety of entertainment

    After rescuing Arcadia Theater from the brink of destruction, the refurbished venue still has to offer entertainment that will fill the 700-seat auditorium. That task of booking shows has fallen to Frank Cunsolo, theater executive director, along with two other committee members.
