High school basketball notebook: Miller leads Central Cambria turnaround

Jordan Miller wasn’t particularly concerned about the gaudy numbers he produced during a record-breaking week.

Of more significance to Central Cambria’s prolific scoring senior was the numeral 3 – as in three consecutive Red Devils wins.

“The most important thing about this week was we won all three games,” Miller said of victories over Cambria Heights (76-61), Bedford (80-54) and Forest Hills (90-84 in triple overtime). “That’s what I look back on. It’s more than the points and assists. We’re starting to win more. We can use these wins to get momentum and go into the playoffs. We all approach the game the same way – come out hard and play our best.”

Miller is hard to stop when he’s at his best. Last week, he had 116 points in three games (38.7 average).

His 51 points in the triple overtime thriller Friday at Forest Hills enabled Miller to break Central Cambria’s single-game scoring record for a third time.

On Feb. 2, he became Central Cambria’ all-time leading scorer, passing Randy McKavish’s mark. Miller currently has 1,838 career points, including 654 points this season (34.4 a game).

The 6-foot guard also broke the Red Devils’ all-time assist record. After dishing out 11 on Friday, he has 484 career assists.

Adding to the big week was Miller’s selection to play in the McDonald’s Roundball Classic in Hagerstown, Md., on March 22. He will participate in the Mid-Atlantic Division I feature game.

“Jordan Miller is the kind of kid that has worked and worked and worked to become a good player,” Central Cambria veteran coach Steve Traino said. “He works so hard out of season. He’s gotten everything that he deserves.”

Traino said Miller’s maturity helped the Red Devils develop as the season progressed. Once 6-10, Central Cambria is a game under .500 (9-10).

“He’s been great with the kids,” Traino said. “He works with our younger kids. We have 15 underclassmen this year. It was a difficult start to the year for us with injuries.

“Now that things are coming around, he’s getting these guys the open looks. He draws double teams and he’s sharing the ball. He’s leading us in steals and assists. It’s an all-around game.”

Although Miller typically draws a double team and sometimes three defenders, being the focal point of the opposition’s defense doesn’t seem to faze him.

“I just try to come in every game and approach it the same way,” Miller said. “I don’t try to force anything. With these guys playing the way they are now, I don’t have to force anything. I just try to do my best on offense and try to get my shots as they come.”

2,000-plus: It’s become relatively common for multi-year starters to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

It’s a little more unusual for two players on the same team to reach such a milestone in the same season.

But two players on the same team reaching the 1,000-point mark in the same game?

That’s not something that happens every night, especially considering that North Star’s Alijah Petrilla needed 43 points to hit 1,000 and got exactly that number on Tuesday against visiting Ferndale.

North Star’s Luke Zellem needed 14 points to reach the mark, and got it off a pass from Petrilla at 4:47 of the second quarter in the Cougars’ 95-51 win.

A 6-foot-3 center, Petrilla had 19 points at halftime. With help from 6-4 forward Zellem and the rest of the Cougars, Petrilla managed to hit a school-record 43 (Dave Poehner, 39 points, 1971) in the game, including his 1,000th point off a pass from Zellem with 5:59 remaining.

“We didn’t expect it to happen. It just kind of happened,” North Star coach Jack Loya said. “The kids just got behind (Alijah). He was unstoppable. He was wound up.”

Loya said the two seniors’ experience and poise has enabled the Cougars to contend in the WestPAC.

“They’re both big guys. Alijah Petrilla is 6-3 but he can handle the ball,” Loya said. “He learned that in junior high when they didn’t have anyone to handle the ball. It’s hard to pressure him. He’s a gem.

“Luke has uncanny ability to know where he is at all times,” the coach added. “He’s very accurate in his shooting. He led Somerset County in field goal accuracy last year.”

North Star boys 1,000-point scorers are: Drew Shubik (1,893), Joe Shubik (1,332), Jake Yoder (1,049), Zellem (1,044), Petrilla (1,031) and Poehner (1,014).

Spectacular Simon: Like Petrilla, United’s Bobby Simon used a 40-plus point effort to surpass a milestone on Wednesday night.

The Lions’ 6-0 senior standout tallied 41 in United’s 92-43 win over Ligonier Valley to go over the 1,500-point mark. Simon finished the night with 1,502 points. The guard followed with a 27-point game in a 60-59 loss in a Thursday game against rival Laurel Valley.

“Bobby is a multi-dimensional player,” United coach Bill Clevenger said. “He can shoot from the outside or he’s able to take his man off the dribble and take him inside to score. He’s matured each year. He’s a four-year starter. He’s gotten physically stronger and worked on his total game not only with the things we do but he’s constantly striving to be a better player.”

Clevenger said United has five regular-season games remaining, plus postseason action.

“Bobby is possibly within reach of the school record of 1,668 (Leroy Anderson),” Clevenger said. “Obviously, we lost two games when the PIAA shortened the season. It will be difficult for him but it’s possible.”

Anderson is followed by Kurt McGinnis (1,589) and Simon (1,529).

On the gridiron and on the court: Blacklick Valley’s Taylor Holby has made his own brand of history in the Vikings’ books with a rare double-double.

The multifaceted athlete became the school’s first 1,000-yard rusher in a single season in the fall and on Friday topped the 1,000-point scoring mark. Holby, who needed seven points to get the mark, hit a breakaway layup off the right side in the second quarter.

He finished with 11 points and is currently No. 9 on the hoops list among Blacklick Valley’s boys with 1,004.

“Taylor is easy to coach,” Vikings’ basketball coach Garry Wurm said. “He’s a hard working player who always gives 100 percent. He’s a gamer. If the game is on the line, he wants the ball and gets things done. A true competitor.”

In 1968, former Blacklick Valley quarterback George Yokitis threw for 1,000 yards and was also a 1,000-point scorer for the Vikings, third on the all-time list.
