TYRONE — Mifflin County finished Saturday’s District 6 Class AAA semifinal with a flourish – both in the dual meet and individual matches – on the way to a 36-26 victory over Westmont Hilltop.

The Huskies (16-4) won the final six bouts to erase a 14-point deficit, and half of those results ended in dramatic fashion.

“You lose matches like that and that’s how you lose dual meets,” Westmont Hilltop coach Matt Beaujon said after his team fell to 10-3.

Mifflin County lost 46-18 to Central Mountain in the championship match.

The Huskies trailed 26-12 when Brandon Folk started Mifflin County’s surge with a 13-8 win over Drake Dorian at 113 pounds, and Tim Pearce cut the deficit to eight with his 7-2 victory over Stephen Zipf at 120.

Lucas Besch pinned Nick Mical to reduce Westmont’s lead to two after the 126-pound match.

At 132, Westmont’s Andrew Garrison jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Luke Bender, but gave up six consecutive points to trail by three entering the third period. Garrison escaped, then scored a takedown with

33 seconds remaining to tie it. When Garrison was still in control with six seconds remaining, it looked like the match might be headed to overtime, but Bender hit a Granby roll that resulted in a reversal at the buzzer.

The next match was also a big one, as Kevin Bair scored a takedown with 15 seconds remaining to break his 2-2 tie with Westmont’s Mike Walsh. Despite controlling the action for most of the match, Walsh couldn’t do more than escape in the final seconds and fell 4-3.

That meant the Hilltoppers needed a fall or technical fall from Ian Helsel at 145 pounds. Helsel was close to a tying reversal in the final seconds, but ended up getting pinned at the buzzer by Joe Knarr.

“It just didn’t work out for us,” Beaujon said. “We’re going to move on to the individual season now.”

The Richland senior had state record jumps twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,

Corridini’s hit propels Shade
