Altoona levels Johnstown

ALTOONA — Greater Johnstown was able to make up some ground on Altoona in its District 6 Class AAA quarterfinal on Tuesday night, but not enough.

The Mountain Lions beat the Trojans 57-22 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals at Tyrone.

Altoona (9-10) had beaten Johnstown (5-18)

57-15 on Friday night.

“The kids wrestled hard (Tuesday night),” Johnstown coach Gary Radnoti said. “The bouts were better than they were the other night. We picked up some more points this time. We won some that we didn’t win the other night.”

The Trojans got falls from Jim Cinko

(135 pounds), Devine Edwards (145) and Javon Vuckovich (160) as well as a major decision by Gervon Simon.

“We picked it up a notch, but we still didn’t have enough,” Radnoti said. “We just ran out of changes we could make.”

Radnoti is hoping that the appearance in the district duals – the first ever for Johnstown – will be a building block for his young team.

“It was a good experience for them,” he said.

“We’re going to build on it for next year. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get back next year and show what we can do.”
