Scholastic basketball briefs 1/21/2010

Boys

Central Cambria 55, Westmont 45

Caleb Handlon scored 18 points and Brian Holsinger added 17 in Central Cambria’s win over host Westmont Hilltop on Wednesday night.

Derek Pavlosky chipped in 11 points for the Red Devils (10-2).

Westmont’s John Valcheff led all scorers with 21 points while teammate Mike Young added 13.



Penn Cambria 42, Bishop McCort 40

Joe Dziabo scored 13 points, including three of the teams six 3-pointers, as Penn Cambria edged host Bishop McCort.

Patrick O’Reilly topped all scorers with 17 points for Bishop McCort.



Cambria Heights 56, Somerset 39

SOMERSET – Cambria Heights broke open a close game by outscoring Somerset 24-9 in the fourth quarter.

Cambria Heights’ Ian Vescovi led all scorers with 23 points while teammate Brad Caldwell added 16.

Jeremiah Judy had 10 points for Somerset.



Forest Hills 70, Bedford 30

BEDFORD – Luke Gallaher had 30 points and six assists, while Tanner Thomas added 21 points and 12 rebounds in Forest Hills’ road win.

Adem Helsel added six steals for the Rangers (9-3).

Marcus Shippey led Bedford with 15 points.



Johnstown 67, Bishop Carroll 36

Johnstown jumped out to a 20-2 lead over visiting Bishop Carroll en route to a lopsided victory.

Alkwan Williams scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Trojans (10-2). Richard Agurs added 13 points while Mark Watson had 10.

Dylan Link led Bishop Carroll (5-7) with 10 points.



Richland 50, Bishop Guilfoyle 35

Dereck Malzi led all scorers with 17 points and Jordan Rozich had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to help lead Richland to a home victory over Bishop Guilfoyle.



Girls

Northern Cambria 71, Purchase Line 48

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Ariel Rocco scored 18 points, including the final one on a free throw near the end of the game, to score her 1,000th career point in Northern Cambria’s victory.

“She’s been a tremendous worker on the court,” Northern Cambria coach Eric Thomas said. “She pulls down so many rebounds and plays so hard.

“She’s by far one of the hardest workers I’ve ever coached.”

Brianna Kochinsky led the Colts (10-3) with 25 points. Jess Rocco had 14 points and Kelley Sedlock had 10.

Patience Small led Purchase Line with 14 points while Sara Small and Cassie Brocious each had a dozen.



North Star 67, Conemaugh Township 59

BOSWELL – Emily Lohr scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as North Star rallied to beat rival Conemaugh Township.

Chelsea Danel had 14 points and eight assists for the Cougars (9-1), who trailed by three at the half. Breann Putman had 15 points on five

3-pointers. Karen Schmidt grabbed nine rebounds.

Julie Byer had 10 points for the Indians while Katie Reckner had 11 points and 16 rebounds.



Windber 67, Ferndale 39

Jen Rasko scored 25 points, had nine rebounds and four steals to lead Windber to a big win over host Ferndale.

Courtney Petrunak added 11 points for the Ramblers.

Brittany Eisenhuth’s 19 points paced Ferndale.



Bishop Carroll 57, Johnstown 53

EBENSBURG – Lindsy Sammarco and Dani Link each scored 16 points helping Bishop Carroll to a win over visiting Johnstown.

Link added 15 rebounds and teammate Krista Krug had 15 points for the Huskies.

Tynesha Smith topped all scorers with 22 points for the Trojans, who also got 11 each from Amber Mangus and Missy Ravida.



Westmont 58, Central Cambria 45

EBENSBURG – Four Westmont players scored in double figures, topped by Alyssa Yewcic with 14 points, in a road victory over Central Cambria.

Gina Rievel added 12 points for the Hilltoppers (9-5), who also got 11 points from Kayla Vliet and 10 from Sara Rogerson.

Emily Wright had a game-high 16 points for the Red Devils.



Shade 49, Meyersdale 40

CAIRNBROOK – Casey Roberts scored 14 points, had six rebounds and four blocked shots as Shade defeated visiting Meyersdale.

Chelsey Pongrac added 12 points and seven steals for the Panthers (5-3).

Katie Vena paced the Red Raiders with 18 points.



Forest Hills 70, Bedford 25

SIDMAN – Becky Bard scored a game-high 21 points and had three steals and two assists as Forest Hills pulled away from visiting Bedford.

Casey Gallaher added 12 points, six steals and five assists for the Rangers, who also got 10 points and 12 rebounds from Amy Wiesheier.

Summer Hartung topped the Bisons with 11 points.

Forest Hills outscored the Bisons 29-0 in the first quarter.



Berlin 60, Shanksville 38

BERLIN – Brooke Snyder led all scorers with 33 points as host Berlin defeated Shanksville-Stonycreek.

Amanda Strucky had 10 points for the Vikings.



Bishop McCort 62, Penn Cambria 29

CRESSON – Four Bishop McCort players scored in double figures, led by Emily Basile and Brittany Boyd with 12 points apiece, in a victory over host Penn Cambria.

Jill Spisak added 11 points for the Crimson Crushers, who also got 10 points from Larissa Swank.

Brianna Mulhearn topped the Panthers with 10 points.



Blacklick Valley 44, Portage 23

NANTY GLO – Danielle Lesso scored 12 points and Alison Verba had 10 in a WestPAC win over visiting Portage.



Cambria Heights 74 Somerset 47

PATTON – Cambria Heights had four players in double figures, led by Kristy Gwizdak’s 23 points, in a win over visiting Somerset.

Gwizdak also had 10 rebounds and six assists.

Miranda Zeanchock (19 points), Kayla Cavello (11) and Danielle Bodek (11) also finished in double figures for the Highlanders (10-3). Zeanchock added five assists.

Nicole Shaffer led Somerset with 20 points, while teammate Chelsea Shaulis added 10.



Ligonier Valley 64, Laurel Valley 19

LIGONIER – Julia Hollick scored a game-high 14 points to lead Ligonier Valley to a victory over intradistrict rival Laurel Valley.

Emily Daugherty and Alysa Derk each scored 12 points and Kristen Gabelt added 10 points for the Mounties, still unbeaten at 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the Heritage Conference. Daugherty added nine assists and five rebounds and Maddy Grimm supplied five rebounds.



Salisbury 69, Turkeyfoot 51

SALISBURY – Lydia Hale-Cooper scored 20 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead Salisbury-Elk Lick to a rout of Turkeyfoot Valley.

Alayna Harshberger had 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Ashley Knauer scored 11 points and Kasey Hale-Cooper had 10.

Kami Koscheck had 19 points and three steals for Turkeyfoot.

Renee Nickelson had 13 points and eight rebounds.
