JOHNSTOWN — Greater Johnstown High School senior LaQuinn Stephens-Howling signed a letter of intent to continue his education and football career at NCAA Division II Slippery Rock University on Monday morning.
Stephens-Howling will major in sports management and is being looked at as a slot back, running back and kick returner.
“I just felt at home when I visited Slippery Rock,” Stephens-Howling said. “I felt most comfortable at Slippery Rock out of all the places I visited.”
The versatile slot back-defensive back was a key part of the Trojans District 6 Class AAA championship team under coach Kevin Marabito.
Stephens-Howling rushed for 362 yards and four touchdowns in 46 carries, a 7.87 average. He caught 12 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 16.42 a catch.
He averaged 51.4 yards per kickoff return and 11.8 yards per punt return. On defense, Stephens-Howling made
15 tackles and a sack. He intercepted three passes.
“Johnstown High prepared me a lot for the future,” Stephens-Howling said. “All the talent we had on the practice field made me better every day. It feels great to have this decision made. It caused a lot of stress the last couple of weeks as I was deciding where I was going to go for the next four years.”
LaQuinn is the son of Rodney and Stephanie Stephens-Howling of Johnstown.

Quality, depth make this a banner year in D-5
Bill Creps heard the comments about District 5 wrestling: Sub-par. Spotty. Unable to compete with the big boys.
So did Jan Clark.
And while both former coaches are officially retired, they can still be found regularly at high school gymnasiums around the state. But they’re no longer hearing whispers or snickers about the quality of District 5 wrestlers, and it’s not because of any hearing loss. -
