JOHNSTOWN —
Westmont Hilltop yielded four falls but won the close matches Tuesday night to defeat visiting Bald Eagle Area in the District 6-AAA dual tournament quarterfinals, 37-27.
The third-seeded Hilltoppers (9-2) took nine of 14 weight classes to advance to Saturday’s semifinals, where they’ll tangle with No. 2 seed Mifflin County.
“Winning dual meets is all about guys going for pins when they get their opponent on their back, and winning the close matches,” said Westmont coach Matt Beaujon.
On this night, none was closer than Ian Helsel’s overtime thriller against BEA’s Matthew Dillon at 145 – a pivotal bout that helped the Hilltoppers survive three late falls by the Eagles.
After a scoreless first period, Helsel and Dillon traded escapes in the second and third. During the first two 30-second overtime periods, Dillon had a pair of escapes and Helsel scored on a reversal.
Then in the sudden-death period, Helsel came off the bottom for an escape and a 4-3 victory.
“When I got two in the first overtime period, I thought I had it,” Helsel said. “But he kept working and I couldn’t stop him. But I pulled it out.”
Helsel and Dillon both weighed in a class lower, at 138, but the coaches juggled their lineups and the two squared off at 145 instead.
“They made a switch at the end,” Helsel said. “But you just have to go out there ready for anyone.”

Westmont’s Logan Blackburn and Drake Dorian followed with close decisions before Stephen Zipf’s 11-0 major over Cody Stine at 120.
Westmont got forfeits for Justin Mills (132) and Mike Walsh (138).
That helped the Hilltoppers overcome falls by BEA’s Clint McCaslin (126), Dustin Coakley (160), Jacob Taylor (170) and Aaron Varner (195).
Hilltop’s Tanner Patton decisioned Tyler Baney, 4-0, at 152. Westmont’s Ryan Burnheimer dominated James Grieb, 9-2, at 182.
