The Somerset Golden Eagles were hitting on all cylinders in Monday night’s first round of the PIHL Class A playoffs at Planet Ice in Richland, scoring eight second-period goals in a dominating 11-0 shutout of the Beaver Bobcats.
Somerset’s Alladin Faily led the Eagles’ scoring barrage, registering four goals and three assists. Forward Craig Eddy added his own hat trick along with three assists as the Eagles improved to 14-9-0 and advanced to play Quaker Valley in the next round.
“We wanted to come out aggressive and jump on them early,” Somerset coach Matt Cavrak said. “Our puck movement was wonderful and created a lot of opportunities.”
With the win, Somerset avenged an early season 7-3 loss to Beaver (11-12).
Despite outshooting the Bobcats 14-5, Somerset only managed one score in the first period, as Faily took a pass from Josh Beistel just inside the blue line and sent a wrist shot past Beaver’s Ethan Spada at 6:40. Gunnar Smith picked up the second assist on the goal.
Somerset found its scoring touch early in the second period, running off five scores over a three-minute span.
Patrick Peters struck first with a goal at 13:47 on a backhand wrap around, followed by Hunter Specht (13:17), Craig Eddy (12:34), Faily (12:14), and Eddy again at 10:49.
Peters picked up his second goal just minutes later. With the Eagles on a power play, Peters took a pass from Faily inside the blue line and circled in front of the net before burying a snapshot at 8:42.
Faily notched his hat trick at 3:42, taking a pass at the point from Eddy and sending a blistering slap shot into the corner of the net.
Eddy closed out the second period with a shorthanded score, breaking behind the Beaver defense as Faily hit him with a breakout pass to send the forward in alone on goal.
T.J Bence and Faily added third period goals to cap the scoring.
Somerset goaltenders Caroline Barth and Damon McClintock combined for 17 saves in the shutout.

Richland's Lumley settles for pair of silver medals
Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
The Richland senior had state record jumps twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
1¾ inches.

Chestnut Ridge senior Michael Young capped six years of triple jumping with a silver medal Friday on the first day of the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University.
Young had a career-best leap of 45-9¼ just behind Jared Horne of Schuylkill Valley whose winning jump was 46-9. -
