District 5-A Quarterfinals

Con. Twp. 1, C. Ridge 0

DAVIDSVILLE – Fourth-seeded Conemaugh Township moved into the semifinals of the District 5-A boys soccer playoffs with a victory Saturday over fifth-seeded Chestnut Ridge.

“I was very pleased with everyone’s performance,” Conemaugh Township coach Chris Miller said.

“It was a complete team effort from the starters to the guys on the bench.”

The Indians got a single goal – from Jake Sauter – in the second half. But keeper Jusdan Griffith made sure that was all they needed.

“We only really gave up four shots on goal,” Miller said.

“And, Jusdan had a great save that was at almost point-blank range to keep them off the board. From top to bottom, everyone played a complete game as one team.”

The Indians take a 13-5 record into Tuesday’s semifinals against top-seeded Northern Bedford, which defeated Forbes Road 1-0 in overtime.

Chestnut Ridge retires at

10-6-1.

High School Girls

District 5-AA Quarterfinals

Bedford 3, Berlin 2

BERLIN – Seventh-seeded Bedford upset No. 2 Berlin in a girls district quarterfinal.

Veronica Jeffries’ unassisted goal for Bedford at 23:42 of the first half was answered by Jenn Wilt’s tally for Berlin at 16:40 off an assist from Chloe Mapes for a tie at the break.

Bedford then surged ahead with a pair of unassisted goals in the second half off Kelly Beegle at 33:21 and Keisha Sigler at 11:37.

Wilt scored at 2:35, again off Mapes, to set the final score.

Windber 4

North Star 1

WINDBER – Junior Amber Wozny scored three goals helping third-seeded Windber to a first-round victory over No. 6 North Star.

With her output on Saturday, Wozny topped the 100 goals mark for her career and now stands at 101.

“I’ve been working from

Day 1 in June,” Wozny said. “It’s great to reach this, especially at home and during a playoff game.”

The other Ramblers’ goal was scored by Sara Bibby. Chantelle Ansell tallied North Star’s goal.

Windber will take on Bedford in the semifinals on Monday at a site and time to be determined.

Con. Twp. 7

N. Bedford 0

DAVIDSVILLE – Top-seeded Conemaugh Township dispatched eighth-seeded Northern Bedford to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

“The Lady Indians came out playing very aggressively,” said winning coach Fred Galiote.

“We played on Northern Bedford’s half of the field

90 percent of the game. Once we got our footing in the mud, we started getting our passes and crosses right on.”

July Beyer scored three goals for the Indians, who got one each off Alyssa Hoffman, Alyshia Brehm, Kelly Vann and Allyson Lonas.

“We had five assists out of seven goals, so the teamwork was outstanding,” Galiote said.

“Our defense held them to only three shots on goal. They could not get past our defense.”

Emily Felton recorded the shutout.

“We won the ball in the middle,” Galiote said.

“If you win the ball in the middle, you keep possession. We kept feeding the forwards, and out patterns paid off.”
