PITTSBURGH — Bedford scored early Friday and never relinquished that lead to keep its postseason hopes alive with a 29-6 victory over Westinghouse in a PIAA sub-regional playoff game at Cupples Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Marcus Shippey scrambled 42 yards for the Bisons first touchdown and then threw to Kirk Crawford to complete the conversion.
Westinghouse responded with Ronald Tyler’s 56-yard scoring run, but failed to make the extra point.
After that, it was all Bedford
– specifically all Paul Detwiler, who returned a kickoff 75 yards for another touchdown, then added scoring runs of 7 and
22 yards to set the final margin.
Tanner Ripple ran the conversion on one of those scores and William Valette kicked the extra point on the last one.
With the Bisons holding an advantage on the scoreboard, the defense shut down Westinghouse with several late turnovers to preserve the win.
When it was done, Detwiler had 110 yards on 17 carries while Shippey had 53 in 16 tries. Shippey also completed 7 of 14 passes while Kyle Deneen attempted one pass for the Bisons.
Westinghouse quarterback Darrel Cosby completed 4 of
13 passes.
Westinghouse led 201-165 in rushing yardage, but Bedford held a 127-115 edge in passing yards.
The Bisons improved to 6-6 while Westinghouse is 3-7.
