JOHNSTOWN —
Quaker Steak & Lube announced last week that the hot-rod-themed restaurant will open its Richland Township location on Wednesday.
The restaurant, known for its chicken wings with more than 20 sauce varieties, will open its eatery at 1425 Scalp Ave. beginning at 3 p.m.
The restaurant will create close to 200 jobs for the area and will be the 12th Quaker Steak & Lube location in Pennsylvania.
The local restaurant encompasses a 5,500-square-foot design and can accommodate seating for more than 170 people, including the brickyard patio and bar.
“We are very excited to open the Johnstown location so new guests can enjoy our award-winning food, real motorcycles, authentic cars and tons of family fun,” the restaurant’s Ray Joll said in a press release, which did not include his position with the corporation.
Highlights of the new location include a 1976 Corvette Stingray, a spinning Bourget Pro-street motorcycle, a 1973 Jaguar XK2 E-type, a collection of license plates including one from each of the 50 states and Jeff Gordon-autographed racing gear.
The brickyard patio has table and bar seating, and guests can watch their favorite teams on flat-screen televisions throughout the restaurant.
According to the Quaker Steak & Lube website, the chain was founded in 1974 by George “Jig” Warren III and Gary “Moe” Meszaros, who converted an abandoned Quaker State gas station into a “cook your own steak” restaurant.
That location in Sharon, Mercer County, is considered “the original.”
Though steaks initially were a specialty, chicken wings now are the restaurant’s most popular dish.
The chain said it sells 70 million chicken wings annually, and has won more than 100 local, national and international awards for them.
Customers wishing to eat the hottest wings on the menu first must sign a release waiver.
In addition to locations in Pennsylvania, the chain has restaurants in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee West Virginia and Wisconsin.
