Bad weather, illnesses increase need for blood

SALIX — The combination of this week’s wintry weather and widespread colds and flu may be playing a part in decreased blood collections, according to officials of the American Red Cross, Greater Alleghenies Blood Services Region.

“More healthy blood donors of all blood types are needed, particularly those with type O negative and B negative blood,” said John Hagins, CEO of the Richland Township-based region.

“Colds and flu may be contributing factors to an increased number of donor appointment cancellations.”

This week’s extreme temperatures and periods of snow have resulted in blood drive cancellations and lower than usual donor turnout in many portions of the 100-county blood services region.

“Donating blood will not cause you to be more susceptible to the flu,” Hagin said. “There is no waiting period to donate blood after receiving a flu vaccine, as long as you are feeling healthy and well the day of donation.”

 

Call for donors

The American Red Cross, Greater Alleghenies Blood Services Region, will hold blood collections at the following sites:

Monday

• Johnstown: Hiram G. Andrews Center, 727 Goucher St., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Portage: St. Joseph Church Hall, 509 Caldwell Ave., 1 to 7 p.m.

Tuesday

• Somerset: Grace United Methodist Church, 320 Felgar Road, noon to 6 p.m.

Wednesday

• Ashville: Ashville VFW, Main Street, noon to 6 p.m.

• Osterburg: St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 175 Graybill Road, 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Thursday

•n Hastings: St. Bernard’s Church, Beaver Street, 2 to 7 p.m.
