U.S. Senate and House members could have a transportation bill on the floor for votes as soon as Friday.
The highway funding plan, once it becomes law, could be big for long-stalled plans to make Route 219 four lanes from Somerset toward Maryland, because it will reallow the use of toll credits for Appalachian highway programs. Those credits would fill the $35 million gap needed to fund an 11 mile extension from Somerset to the Meyersdale bypass, U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Hollidaysburg, said.
“This critical north-south route will open the door to greater economic development and a higher standard of living for everyone in this important transportation corridor,” Shuster said.
Shuster, a House transportation member, was picked for a Senate-House committee that crafted the compromise bill, which would fund transportation through 2014.
House and Senate leadership has given it their nod. It now goes to legislators for review - and likely, a vote Friday or early Saturday, barring setbacks.
