JOHNSTOWN —
Stone Bridge was bathed in orange light on Wednesday night.
That color was chosen in recognition of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week in Johnstown, which concludes today.
During a City Council meeting earlier that evening, Mayor Tom Trigona issued a proclamation paying tribute to the National MS Society, which uses orange as the primary color in its logo.
Reading from the document, Trigona said the city “encourages efforts to enhance research, funding, educate others about MS and raise public awareness in hopes of creating a world free of multiple sclerosis.”
Speaking before the meeting, he said helping good causes is “one of the nicer things of being mayor.”
Johnstown resident Angela Gorzelsky, a National MS Society supporter, accepted the proclamation.
“It’s very exciting,” said Gorzelsky, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2003.
“We’ve been trying to get different communities around the state to do proclamations, so this was a pretty big deal to have it happen in Johnstown.”
Multiple sclerosis affects the brain and spinal cord when the body’s own immune system eats away at the protective sheath covering nerves.
More than 2 million people worldwide have MS.
