No name for new Johnstown hockey team

JOHNSTOWN — Johnstown’s entry in the North American Hockey League does not have a name yet, but it will not be the Jets or the Chiefs.

Jim Bouchard, who is the principal owner of the team formerly known as the Alaska Avalanche - which the Johnstown Sports Partnership bought and moved here - said the decision on a team name and colors will need to be made in the next few days.

Bouchard announced the move, which The Tribune-Democrat first reported last week, this morning’s press conference at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

“(The Janesville) Jets are in the league already,” Bouchard said. “We did approach to try to get the Chiefs name back. We can’t get the Chiefs name back because it’s owned by the ECHL.”

Bouchard said that the decision on the team’s name must be made in the next few days so that equipment can be ordered for the junior team to be ready for the season to begin in September.

“We literally will have to try to get the name knocked down this week,” he said. “We’ve been getting a lot of emails from community members. We’ve vetted it down to about. We hope to have that done in the next five days.”

Bouchard said there is a chance the name will be recognizable to local fans.

“Some of the names that are coming out are legacy-type names that the Johnstown folks will be happy with versus some crazy new name,” he said.
