1. OBAMA TRIES TO RALLY PUBLIC SUPPORT AS ‘FISCAL CLIFF’ LOOMS
President Barack Obama is scheduled to address workers at a suburban Philadelphia toy company amid wrangling with Congressional Republicans over how to deal with a package of tax increases and spending cuts set to go forward at year’s end unless they can reach an agreement. Obama is pushing for an extension of current rates on those making $250,000 or less and raising rates on top earners.
2. FORMER PA SENATE LEADER FACES CORRUPTION SENTENCING
Longtime state Senate Democratic leader Robert Mellow is due before a federal judge for misusing his taxpayer-funded staff. Mellow pleaded guilty last May to a federal conspiracy charge, adding him to a long line of state lawmakers prosecuted for misusing public funds and resources for campaigns and other purposes.
3. CORBETT WILLING TO MEET NEW AG OVER SANDUSKY INVESTIGATION
Gov. Tom Corbett says he’d be willing to meet with investigators examining how child sex abuse allegations against Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky were handled when he was attorney general. State Attorney General-elect Kathleen Kane has questioned why it took more than 2 years to bring Sandusky to justice. But Corbett says he wouldn’t participate if he felt the probe was a “political game.”
4. CLASSROOM ‘FIREBALL’ STUDENT RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL
An eighth grader from Carlisle is back home after having to be hospitalized when a classroom science experiment went haywire on Wednesday, burning him and other students. The teen was released Thursday after being treated for burns to his face and torso.
5. BIG BEN SAYS THERE’S A CHANCE HE PLAYS SUNDAY
Ben Roethlisberger’s injured right shoulder still hurts, but the Steelers quarterback was able to practice in a limited role on Thursday. Roethlisberger hasn’t played in two weeks after injuring his shoulder and rib in a 16-13 overtime win over Kansas City. The Steelers meet AFC North-leading Baltimore on Sunday.
