JOHNSTOWN —
Bobby Wyatt of Mobile, Ala., won the 59th Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions with a solid final round on Sunday to close the four-day event two strokes better than runner-up Mike Miller of Brewster, N.Y.
Wyatt is a University of Alabama player who finished the tournament with a score of 9-under-par 271.
“This is a wonderful place,” Wyatt said of the par-70 Sunnehanna Country Club course. “This is my first year here and I fully intend on returning. This is one of the best tournaments I’ve ever played in and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. This is one of the best run amateur tournaments I’ve ever been in.”
Wyatt began Sunday’s final round in a three-way tie for first place with Miller and Sebastian Vazquez of Mexico City, Mexico. He gradually pulled away from the 78-player field for the two-stroke victory.
“He’s a really solid player,” Miller said of Wyatt. “I hadn’t played with him before but I had read a lot about him and heard about him. He lived up to the hype.”
Three golfers tied for third with a four-round score of 274. Those were Vazquez, Nicholas Reach of Moscow, Lackawanna County, and Justin Thomas of Goshen, Ky.
“It was a great experience,” Vazquez said. “I hope I can come next year and win it.”

Emergency response team hones skills at training camp
Almost certainly, no Cambria County Special Emergency Response Team members will ever be called upon to create a small bridge out of two pieces of wood and rope, use the newfangled walkway to get a group of individuals from one point to another, pick up an object at the end of the course and then figure out a way back to the starting point.
But the skills SERT officers gain by participating in drills like those – leadership, teamwork, trust and creativity – can be invaluable when they are serving and protecting the community. -
