Group promoting energy-efficient buildings in region

JOHNSTOWN — There are at least a half-dozen Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified buildings throughout the local area.

The Pittsburgh-based Green Building Alliance would like to see that number increase significantly during the upcoming years.

On May 1, a LEED Green Associate prep course is scheduled to take place inside the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown’s Engineering and Science Building from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Attendees will learn about LEED standards and terminology, which are the voluntary guidelines designed by the U.S. Green Building Council.

“We’re really excited about it. We want to build some momentum around here,” said Leslie Montgomery, communications director for the Green Building Alliance, a western Pennsylvania affiliate of the national organization.

The seminar is part of the alliance’s attempt to become more active in the region.

In late February, the organization hosted a committee meeting in Richland Township that was attended by about 20 people. A similar gathering is scheduled to take place on April 1, at LEED-certified CJL Engineering on Horner Street in Johnstown. The purpose of the get-togethers is to educate business owners and other individuals about how to decrease energy and water consumption, create comfortable building environments and reduce costs.

“We want to make sure we share all the information out there with the different levels of people,” said Montgomery.

The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, a Johnstown-based nonprofit philanthropic organization, has been supporting the alliance’s local efforts.

“They do a great job leading the charge for green buildings,” said the foundation’s president, Mike Kane.
