Parents: High school team taunted with slurs

BRENTWOOD — Officials at a Pittsburgh-area school district say three students have been disciplined and the superintendent says he’s reviewing video from a recent high school game to determine if anyone else will be punished for racial slurs directed at a predominantly black basketball team.

Brentwood Superintendent Ronald Dufalla says he was at Friday night’s game against Monessen, but says he hasn’t been able to confirm several other instances of misbehavior and claims “there’s some misinformation out there.”

But Monessen parents say two Brentwood students dressed in banana suits and others called the Monessen players “monkeys” and “cotton pickers” along with other slurs.

Monessen coach Joe Salvino says he’s heard similar slurs at Brentwood games in the past and says it’s “disrespectful.”
