New Ebensburg park named for nearby trail

EBENSBURG — A call to borough residents to name a newly developed Ebensburg mini park ended up yielding dozens of suggestions, some honoring prominent locals and celebrating the site’s lumber history.

In the end, borough officials realized one idea would end up being the park’s name, whether they picked it or not.

“Ghost Town Trail Park,” said Borough Manager Dan Penatzer.

“Given the fact it sits right next to the trail, that’s how people are going to know it. So we might as well call it that.”

“It’s going to be a starting and ending point for a lot of hikers and bikers ... and it’s probably going to be a halfway point for others,” Councilman Joe Lutz added. “So it makes sense.”

The borough’s recreation committee recommended the name after sorting through finalists such as Plank Park and Lumber Yard.

It’s the borough’s third landscaped park gateway. The others, Penn-Eben and Kimball parks, are on opposite ends of the downtown business district.

The park is located on West Street between the Ghost Town Trail and Memorial Park. Council envisioned it replacing the entrance to the former Babcock Lumber site, which was acquired in 2009.

The property was home to a dilapidated office building and kiln. It is now a landscaped area with lighting, brick walkways, a pavilion and benches.

State funds were used for demolition work, and borough workers handled some of the park development to keep costs down. The project’s construction cost about $25,000, Penatzer said.

Council plans to formally dedicate the new park in the spring.
